Virginia Cavaliers (4-7)

Virginia isn’t a good football team by any means. It allows just less than 400 yards of offense per game and it ranks 107th in the country in run defense, surrendering 203.9 yards per contest.

But at least the Cavaliers lose in style. Their 34th-ranked offense averages 415 yards per game and they actually rank 25th in the nation in passing. Marc Verica didn’t embarrass himself against a tough Boston College defense last week, throwing for 284 yards.

Leading rusher and touchdown machine Keith Payne didn’t play against the Eagles’ top-notch run defense last week but should return to face Virginia Tech. While the Cavaliers gave bettors a big shock when they knocked off Miami on October 30, they’ve returned to Earth since then, dropping three straight games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

(13) Virginia Tech Hokies (9-2)

Make it nine in a row. The Virginia Tech Hokies just keep rolling. They’re also pleasing bettors to no end, going 8-1 against the spread during their streak. Not even road trips to rivals North Carolina and Miami could stop the Hokies over the last two weeks.

The running game continues to be Virginia Tech’s bread and butter. Last week, Miami’s athletic pass “D” kept Tyrod  Taylor in check, holding him to 94 passing yards and 7 completions on 14 attempts. But Ryan Williams and Darren Evans ran through the Hurricanes, combining for 215 yards on 28 carries. Virginia Tech now averages 212 yards per game on the season.

The pick:

Virginia Tech looks like a solid bet to cover the 23.5 points. Virginia really struggles to stop the run. It wouldn’t be the least bit surprising to see Taylor, Williams and Evans roll up over 300 rushing yards against the Cavaliers – especially at home.

And before you decide that Virginia’s above-average offense can score on the Hokies, consider that the Cavaliers haven’t moved the ball nearly as well against major programs. They were well under their season average even in their win over Miami; Florida State held them to 304 total yards; they totalled 335 yards against North Carolina. Also, Virginia Tech has kept opponents under 21 points in six straight games.

This game has blowout written all over it.
