Penn State

The Penn State Nittany Lions seem to be improving over the last few weeks. Joe Paterno’s team faces a tough test in Columbus this Saturday. Can they add to Paterno’s win total with a big upset?

The Penn State offense has been sparked in the last couple weeks by quarterback Matt McGloin. He has thrown seven touchdowns and just one interception in his time under center this year. Paterno announced earlier this week that McGloin will start over Robert Bolden this week. The running game has been better the last couple weeks as well, and freshman Silas Redd is a big reason for that improvement. Redd ran for 131 yards last week on just 11 carries and showed just how talented he is. Evan Royster has also run for more than 100 yards in their last two games. Penn State must be able to run the ball against Ohio State.

The Penn State defense has been the strength of the team overall this year. They have been struggling against the run of late, which is worrisome for them as they enter this tough environment. The front four has been getting beat off the ball and teams have been running it right up the middle on the Nittany Lions. They have continued to do a nice job minimizing the damage. Penn State is allowing just 20.1 points per game on the year.

Ohio State

The Ohio State Buckeyes were off last weekend, but they rose to #9 in the BCS Standings. They now enter the toughest part of their schedule. They are still in the running for another Big Ten title, but they can’t slip up at all from here on out.

Terrelle Pryor isn’t the Heisman front runner that some thought he would be, but he has definitely improved as a quarterback this year. Pryor has thrown for 1,997 yards and 20 touchdowns already this year. He is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and he always has the ability to run if needed. Ohio State’s offense has been very good all season long. Boom Herron has stepped up as the main running back for the team. Dane Sanzenbacher and Devier Posey are a very solid wide receiver duo on the outside. This unit has plenty of weapons, and it seems the offensive line is coming together, which will make this team even more dangerous.

The Ohio State defense let them down against Wisconsin, but overall they have played well this year. Ohio State ranks third in the nation in total defense and points allowed per game. Cameron Heyward is the star of the defense, but the Buckeyes have a lot of guys who do a good job understanding their role. They will need to get more heat on the quarterback to finish the season, because 15 sacks through nine games just isn’t very impressive for this unit. Expect Ohio State to try to stuff the run and make the Nittany Lions beat them through the air.

The Pick:

I think both teams will try to establish the running game early in this one. Ohio State should win this game, but 18 points is a lot against a solid team like Penn State. I like both defenses to play well, so I’ll take the under in this one.

Penn State vs. Ohio State Score Prediction: Ohio State 27 Penn State 13
