Iowa

The Hawkeyes trailed almost all game long against Indiana last week in Bloomington, but they narrowly escaped with an 18-13 victory. This team must play better this weekend or Northwestern could end their chances at a Big Ten title.

Ricky Stanzi is having a monster year for the Hawkeyes. He has thrown 20 touchdowns this year and just three interceptions. He has also completed 68.8% of his passes this season. Stanzi’s numbers are just about as impressive as you’ll find for a quarterback, but he doesn’t get much hype. Iowa does have a couple of the best receivers they have had in the school’s history. Johnson-Koulianos and McNutt both do a good job getting open on a consistent basis. The running game has been depleted of late, but Adam Robinson is expected to be back for this matchup.

Iowa allows just 14.6 points per game, so they are very stingy on defense. The Iowa defense is led by what may be the best front four in the nation. Clayborn, Binns, Klug, and Ballard are all great at getting after the passer as well as stopping the run. The Hawkeyes rank fifth in the nation in rush defense. They are allowing just 85.2 yards per game on the ground. The safeties are very good, but the cornerbacks have been a bit of a weak spot. Iowa is allowing 209 yards per game through the air. Overall, this Hawkeyes defense is very good.

Northwestern

The Northwestern Wildcats led Penn State 21-0 with 56 seconds left in the second quarter last weekend. They proceeded to give up 35 straight points and lose 35-21 in Happy Valley. Can Pat Fitzgerald’s team rebound this weekend against a tough Iowa squad?

Dan Persa is the main man on offense for Northwestern. He is the Wildcats leading rusher and leading passer. Persa is a very good runner, and he is completing 73.4% of his passes this season. The Wildcats have several very capable receivers on the outside, but Jeremy Ebert is definitely their primary play maker. This is an offense that can be difficult to stop because of their complex formations and good decision making. If they could get someone to step up at the tailback spot this unit would be much more dangerous.

The Northwestern defense has done a good job minimizing the damage this year. They are 75th in the nation in total defense, but they have allowed just 21.9 points per game. They rank 100th in the nation against the pass, so expect Stanzi and the Hawkeyes to look to go after this secondary. The Wildcats will need their front four to put some pressure on Stanzi in this one. Expect Northwestern to bring the heat often in this one.

The Pick:

The Iowa Hawkeyes are an extremely good football team, but ten points is probably a little much for a game like this. Northwestern has beaten Iowa the last two years, so they typically give the Hawkeyes some trouble. I think Iowa wins this one, but I think Northwestern +10 is the wise play in this game.

Iowa vs. Northwestern Score Prediction: Iowa 24 Northwestern 20
