Hawaii Warriors (7-2)

Many betting experts considered Nevada the top challenger to powerful Boise State in the WAC but that changed in mid-October when Hawaii knocked off the Wolfpack. Now, it looks like the Warriors are Boise State’s greatest threat.

On the strength of a powerhouse offense, averaging 491.7 yards per game, Hawaii has won six straight. The key is its top-ranked passing attack. Bryant Moniz has thrown for 3,247 yards and 25 touchdowns in nine games this season. He loves to air it out and threw for “only” 326 yards and three scores against Idaho last week. Hawaii does leave plenty to be desired on defense, however. The Warriors’ rank of 38th in the nation isn’t horrible but better offenses have scored on them. Most telling is the USC game; Hawaii managed 36 points but the Trojans dropped 49 in a final score that could be very similar to what we see this week.

(2) Boise State Broncos (7-0)

Poor Boise State won by 29 points against Louisiana Tech last week and still didn’t cover the spread. That should tell you how dominant the Broncos have been. Since scraping by Virginia Tech by three points in Week 1, the Broncos have won by 45, 13, 59, 43, 48 and 29 points.

Kellen Moore leads the country’s No. 5 offense and has been outstanding this year. He almost never makes poor decisions and has 18 touchdown passes versus just two interceptions with a completion percentage a hair under 70.

Boise State’s defense has been great, too, at least on paper. The Broncos have the third-ranked “D” overall and are especially strong against the run, ranking second with just 75.4 yards allowed per game.

The pick:

The first thing you should do, for Pete’s sake, is bet the OVER. We should expect these two teams to combine for 70-plus points with their eyes closed.

Secondly, consider taking Hawaii to cover. The Warriors are an outstanding 8-1 against the spread this year and have shown they can score on just about anyone. Don’t forget, Boise State allowed 30 points to Virginia Tech. It can be beatable against a high-powered attack.

Boise State will almost certainly win this one but I’m not convinced it will cover the points.
