Indiana State (0-0) vs No. 25 Penn State (0-0) Gambling Preview + Predictions

If you are a quality Big Ten school like Penn State, there is nothing like starting the season with a game against Indiana State from the FCS level.

Indiana State played one game against an FBS opponent last year, and they were beaten 40-7 by Cincinnati in that matchup. Penn State is hoping to have a breakout season in the Big Ten, but it would be a mistake to put too much stock into the results of this season opener.

Indiana State

The Indiana State football program has been terrible for quite a few years, but head coach Trent Miles is starting to change that.

Indiana State finished 6-5 last year, which was its first winning season since 1996. Miles spent time on both the Washington Huskies and Notre Dame Fighting Irish coaching staff before taking over the top job at Indiana State. How far has this team come in the last year or two? Indiana State actually had a horrific 33 game losing streak just a couple years ago, so the fact that they went 6-5 last season was quite an accomplishment.

The truth is the only reason Indiana State is playing this game is because they are getting a hefty payday out of it.

Penn State

Who will be the starting quarterback for the Nittany Lions? Legendary coach Joe Paterno has yet to announce the starter, and it might not be known until a day or two before the kickoff. Regardless of who starts, both Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden will see plenty of playing time. Bolden started last season under center, but McGloin took the job away in November. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Both quarterbacks need to work on making better decisions with the ball. Evan Royster finished his career as the all-time leading rusher at Penn State. Silas Redd emerged as an impressive runner last season, and he should do well for the Nittany Lions this year. Stephfon Green should be a quality backup if he can stay out of trouble.

Derek Moye is a star on the outside for Penn State, and the Nittany Lions would be wise to get him the ball often. The problem for Penn State on offense is they aren’t very good on the offensive line.

Penn State is known as Linebacker U, and the linebackers at Penn State should be very good once again this year. Michael Mauti will be the star of this defense, and the NFL scouts are keeping a close eye on him. Nate Stupar and Gerald Hodges are solid at the linebacker spot as well, and this group of linebackers should be as good as anyone in the Big Ten.

The secondary is extremely athletic, and they should fare very well in coverage.

Overall, this defense should help keep Penn State in just about every game they play.

Joe Paterno’s teams aren’t known for running up the score, which makes 37.5 points a huge amount. Indiana State will get blown away in this one, but I think they’ll keep it just inside the spread.
