Utah State Aggies vs. Oklahoma Sooners Preview

The Sooners will have many new faces since they lost several guys, including QB Sam Bradford, to the NFL. However, they are still stacked with one of the best RB’s in the country and they are the favorites to win the Big 12 and have a good chance to get back to the national title game. Last season the Sooners were very un-Sooners like going 8-5, but they were beset by injuries and they did end the season on a high note beating Stanford 31-27 in the Sun Bowl.

Utah State only went 4-8 last season, but they have a solid offense and in 2 of their 4 wins put up over 50 points. However, their defense killed them giving up an average of 36 points per game.

QB Landry Jones came in when Bradford went out with a season-ending injury last year and had a solid season with 3,198 yards with 26 TD and 14 INT. Last season WR Ryan Broyles stepped up and became a #1 threat with 89 catches for 1,120 yards and 15 TD’s and he, DeJuan Miller (36 rec 434 yards 1 TD) and Jaz Reynolds (13 rec 256 yards) will be tough to stop.

The Solid OU passing attack is not a good thing for the Utah State secondary that gave up at least 240 passing yards in 8 games last season.

The Utah State special teams’ unit also has to be wary about Broyles on their punts since the WR averaged nearly 16 yards per punt return last season.

The most dangerous weapon on offense for the Sooners is RB DeMarco Murray, who is ultra-athletic and possesses world-class speed. One thing that has held him back is injuries, but he is currently healthy, which is not good for the Aggies.

The Utah State offense may have to score a ton of points since their weakness is their defense, which is a unit that finished dead last in the WAC last season giving up 455 yards per game. The Aggies’ D has some new blood and is a quick and fast unit but, matching up with all the weapons that the Sooners have is a tall task.

The Utah State offense, which ranked 20th in the nation last season, is led by returning QB Diondre Borel (2,885 yards 17 TD 4 INT) and he can also run the ball with 458 yards and 6 TD.

One big question mark for the Aggies is RB Robert Turbin, who last season was stellar rushing for 1,296 yards and 13 TD’s, but he tore his knee up in the off-season and it remains to be seen if he is 100% back. He and 5’8” dynamo Michael Smith have to run the ball well for the Aggies not to be embarrassed in against OU.

Utah State has a couple of decent WR’s in Stanley Morrison and Eric Moats, but while the Aggies’ offensive line is solid in run blocking their weakness is pass protection. Their O-line has to keep the Sooners D and especially DE Jeremy Beal from getting to Borel. The Sooners have a decent secondary and while they are strong at the safety position they lack playmaking corners.

The strength of the Sooners’ defensive line is getting to opposing QB’s and since the Aggies will have trouble in pass protection Borel may be in for a long game.

The Sooners will not lose this game, but will they be able to cover the 34-point spread? The answer is yes, as they will put up a ton of points and their D will get to Borel early and often as well as stop the run.
