Utah

The squad from Salt Lake had a glaring sap of momentum in recent weeks. Utah started its season a convincing 8-0, but after consecutive losses to Texas Christian and Notre Dame, the Utes have only squeaked by San Diego State and BYU to wind down 2010.  To make things worse, in the Las Vegas Bowl the Utes are meeting a bona fide BCS-buster team of TCU’s caliber (the first team to crush Utah this year).

Yet, it can’t be ignored that Utah is a strong MWC team and has assets to make this a game. The Utes crack the nation’s Top 25 in both scoring and points allowed. Running backs Eddie Wide and Matt Asiata have over 600 yards a piece on the ground and WRs DeVonte Christopher and Jereme Brooks have over 600 air-mailed yards a piece. The remarkably balanced offense is spurred by sophomore QB Jordan Wynn, who registered 2,334 yards and 17 majors on the season. The squad proved itself in Week 1 versus Pitt of the Big East and also crushed Big 12 rep Iowa State 68-27.

It is clear Utah is not a pushover, but it still must line up against the most efficient QB in the land and a team that would beat most FBS schools – AQ-conference or not – on any given day.

Boise State

If Boise didn’t have its notorious OT-slipup against Nevada, the purveyors of Smurf Turf would be playing in a BCS bowl this season. Instead, the players and fans must deal with the disappointment of playing in the MAACO Las Vegas Bowl, rather an afterthought, for sure.

Doubtlessly, the game’s outcome may depend on how Boise responds to this. If the team’s heart isn’t in it, Utah may pull an upset. But if the Broncos use the single blemish in 2010 as fuel for proving to everyone that the Nevada loss was a fluke, Boise should hum along and dispatch Utah no problem.

Boise certainly has the ruthless efficiency to do so. Heisman-shortlist QB Kellen Moore cruised through all opponents with over 3,500 yards, 33 TDs and a fantastic 71% completion rate. Boise also had a 1,000-yard rusher (Doug Martin) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Titus Young). To make matters more pronounced still, the Broncos had the fourth-best defense in terms of points allowed, surrendering less than two majors per game.

The Pick

If Boise State uses this boundless potential to inflict punishment, Utah is almost certainly dead in the water. If the Broncos are heartbroken and listlessly spinning their wheels, the window is open for the Utes to atone for their disappointing latter third of the season. However, Boise looked good on Dec. 4 against Utah State (a 50-14 victory) so the smart money is on the Broncos taking this game and covering the spread.

Utah vs. Boise State Score Prediction: Utah 21 Boise State 44
