Air Force
The Falcons are a non-AQ major player in 2010 that has been even better than their record suggests. Air Force is 8-4, yet the academy lost to Oklahoma, Utah (both in the Top 10) and San Diego State by a combined 10 points. If one or two out of those three squeakers go slightly different, Air Force’s 2010 campaign quickly goes from impressive to outstanding.
The Coloradans find success with their running game. At almost 318 yards per game, Air Force is third in the country in rush yards per; RB Asher Clark eclipsed 1,000 yards and starting pivot Tim Jefferson has chipped in with 769 and a ridiculous 15 rush TDs. Jefferson can also throw just enough to keep defenses honest, as proven by his 1,342 passing yards and 10 majors.
Air Force’s defense has been stout; altogether the only embarrassing loss on the team’s ledger is a 38-7 upending by Texas Christian, and TCU is easily one of the best teams in the nation. Other than the TCU game, no opponent has surpassed 30 points this season against the Falcons “D”.
Air Force faces a Georgia Tech team that must wade with the big boys week in and week out, but are still a team in a down year that may be ripe for the picking in Shreveport.
Georgia Tech
The Yellow Jackets are dealing with a decidedly ho-hum 2010. In the last week of the regular season, Tech lost a disappointing one to hated Georgia 42-34 to finish .500 on the year. That the Jackets lead the FBS in rushing is little solace for a program that aims to use its triple-option attack to win ballgames.
Obviously, both team’s offensive game-plans will be dominated almost exclusively by the run. Tech’s starting pivot, Josh Nesbitt, has less than 700 pass yards on the year, but has contributed with 737 rush yards and 10 TDs. These are reasonable numbers considering Nesbitt was injured the final three regular season games. The Jackets’ leading ball-carrier is RB Anthony Allen, who has amassed over 1,200 yards and will be a focal point of the attack. Allen has carried 63 times in the past couple games and expect a similar amount of action for him against the Falcons.
A three-game losing streak to Clemson, Virginia Tech and Miami near the end of the season buried Tech’s chances for anything really impressive in 2010, but still expect Johnson’s side to come out with gusto in an effort to finish the season on a symbolic and recruiting high note.
The Pick
Air Force’s Jefferson is a playmaker and presents a more balanced threat than Nesbitt, but Tech probably has the more talented team in general. If the Yellow Jackets have the amount of pent-up frustration that they should following the Georgia game, I’ll pick a slight upset in the Independence Bowl. Expect a ton of rushing yards in this one.
Air Force vs. Georgia Tech Score Prediction: Air Force 20 Georgia Tech 24
