Coach: Charlie Weis
2008 Record: 7-6

It takes a leap of faith (pun intended) to put Notre Dame this high in the rankings, but former New England Patriots guru Weis is slowly rebuilding this storied program. After a pathetic 3-9 2007 campaign, Notre Dame was bowl eligible last season and picked up some momentum by crushing Hawaii in its bowl game.

The staff has recruited top-tier talent to South Bend and this should be the year when the pieces come together.

Supposedly all-everything quarterback Jimmy Clausen has come along slowly. Now a junior, his first couple of seasons have been marked by sacks, turnovers and virtually no production. But, this was a team-wide haze and cannot be blamed all on Clausen. Perhaps the 49-point outburst against Hawaii foretells what’s to come for the Irish attack in 2009.

Defensively, the Golden Domers lose some productive players like Maurice Crum and David Bruton, but returning strong safety Kyle McCarthy is a tackling machine.

Team Strengths
The Irish have a fantastic receiving corps. Golden Tate (gold name for a Golden Domer), Michael Floyd and Duval Kamara present size and speed mismatches for most defenses. Kyle Rudolph is a great young tight end and Clausen possesses the arm to get these playmakers the ball.

If the running game can be anything more than pedestrian, Notre Dame will have a very good offense.

Team Weaknesses
There are questions in the front seven. The secondary should be fine, but other productive defenders are gone and the Irish must be careful they don’t turn every 2009 contest into a barn-burner. Freshman Manti Te’o may step in right away at Sam linebacker.

It got really bad before it got better in South Bend and the team hasn’t yet proven the rebuilding process is over. September 12 in the Big House at Michigan is a huge test for this program as well as the annual tilt against loathed Southern Cal. If Weis cracks nine or ten wins, his seat at the helm of the program cools considerably.

This team has the talent to do that.

2009 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Record Prediction: 10-3

Charlie Weis is under the gun and will not last the season if this team does not improve. They should have the talent to compete and win, so it could be a big year for the Irish.
