ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: North Carolina Tar Heels

Coach: Butch Davis
2009 Record: 8-5

North Carolina Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

NFL-castoff Butch Davis has been stocking the shelves at UNC with pro-caliber talent for a few years now, and the proof is really in the pudding in 2010. The defense is littered with next-level players and it shouldn’t be fun for opposing offenses to line up against the Tar Heels.

ACC big dogs Miami and Virginia Tech are in the Coastal with the Heels and Carolina also draws LSU, Rutgers, Clemson and Florida State.

These are hurdles that may or may not be surmountable, but it won’t be for lack of talent or craze in Chapel Hill.

Team Strengths:

To say the defense looks like they should be playing the St. Louis Rams in Week 3 – is only a mild overstatement. Defensive tackle Marvin Austin, DE Robert Quinn, linebackers Bruce Carter, Quan Sturdivant, S Deunta Williams and CB Kendric Burney will all see the NFL sooner or later. Several others are potentially headed for the pros as well.

Heels’ kicking legend Connor Barth’s little brother Casey returns as a junior to thump the pigskin, and Grant Shallock returns to his punting duties.

The offense must be carried by the capable duo of RBs Ryan Houston and Shaun Draughn.

Team Weaknesses:

Senior T.J. Yates has been decidedly average in his years as a starting pivot, to the extent that redshirt freshman Bryn Renner might win the job. Ever since WR Hakeem Nicks was drafted by the New York Giants, the offense has lacked an impact playmaker. The offensive line is experienced, yet unspectacular.

The highlights would probably be guard Alan Pelc and talked-about freshman tackle James Hurst (he’s 6”7, 305 – what are they putting in the water?)

2010-2011 North Carolina Football Prediction: 10-3

It is very rare to see this much talent on a defense, especially at a somewhat middling power like North Carolina. Davis uses his NFL acumen to do a great job recruiting. Yet, the schedule is hellish and there’s no way the Heels get through unscathed. LSU in Atlanta, GA, and Miami and the Seminoles on the road stick out especially.

At the very least, this team is going to make things unpleasant for the conference’s – and the nation’s – elite.
