ACC Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: NC St. Wolfpack

Coach: Tom O’Brien
2009 Record: 5-7

North Carolina St. Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +50000

North Carolina State annually fielded a strong team at the turn of the decade, but things haven’t been great since Tom O’Brien took over three seasons ago. A lot of that can be attributed to shoddy luck more than anything.

The luck may not turn around in 2010 either, as the Wolfpack draw a particularly daunting schedule.

The players are in Raleigh to make any conference game interesting, but it will be difficult for NC State to climb out of a hole it has been in since 2008.

Team Strengths:

NC State has a great quarterback duo in the person(s) of junior Russell Wilson and sophomore Mike Glennon. Wilson is a two-sport star, also excelling on the baseball diamond. Glennon was highly-touted and should be more than ready to step in when Wilson finally hangs ’em up.

Wilson/Glennon also have a trio of marquee targets in WRs Jarvis Williams and Owen Spencer and TE George Bryan. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Defensively, Sam ’backer Audie Cole – in addition to having a badass handle – led the team in tackles in ’09 and streaks around the field in an imposing 6”5, 240 lb frame.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line has smatterings of talent via transfers and junior college, but the experience is almost nil and it could be a weak point. The secondary, also, is nothing much to get worked up about. Atlantic Coast Conference teams shouldn’t have any trouble running points up on the Wolfpack.

Redshirt freshman Chris Ward should also be a wildcard at punter; veteran Jeff Ruiz might have to unseat him.

The middle of the offensive line (center, both guard positions) is chock full of sophomores and looks a little shaky also.

2010-2011 NC State Football Prediction: 4-8

NC State gets the punishment of drawing North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech out of the Coastal division.

If that weren’t crappy enough, the Wolfpack still must face Clemson, Florida State and a non-conference Cincinnati. With so many holes on defense, it will be nearly impossible to make up much ground with such an abusive 2010 slate.

If O’Brien can build some recruits around Glennon, NC State might have something in a couple seasons, but it looks like further call for patience in Raleigh this time around.
