New Mexico Lobos 2015 NCAA Football Gambling Odds & Picks

2015-2016 Football Previews (MWC) – Lobos

The New Mexico Lobos enter the 2015 NCAA Football Season coming off a 4-8 campaign in 2014. They’ll look to take advantage of a favorable schedule in their search for a Bowl Game.

Head Coach: Bob Davie
2014 Record: 4-8
Season Win Total (from 5Dimes): 4.5

In order for this group to reach that goal of making a bowl game, the defense will have to improve a bit in terms of points allowed. Last season, the Lobos were 112th in the nation in that category, as they gave up 35.9 points per contest.

They’ll also need to find more balance on offense. The rushing game was excellent; the passing game — not so much.

Team Strengths

Last year’s squad really knew how to run the football. Despite going just 4-8 on the year, the team managed to rush for 310.4 yards per contest.

That number was good enough for fifth in the country, and it’s the only reason the team managed to score as many points as it did (27.7 PPG) with the passing game being as anemic as it was.

In 2015, the rushing game should be strong once again. The Lobos have four starters returning to the offensive line, and Jhurel Pressley is set to return in the backfield as well.

On defense, the only true area you can point to as a strength is the defensive line — and that’s only because it does experience at this point in the process.

Team Weaknesses

Sticking with the defense, this team must improve its pass defense. Last season, New Mexico was just 92nd in the country in that category, which is a major reason the team is shifting its defensive scheme to a 3-3-5 base formation.

Offensively, the passing game must improve. It’s not a huge surprise this team struggled to accumulate passing yards considering its option tendencies out of the pistol formation, but you have to at least be a threat in the passing game to take pressure off your running back and mobile quarterbacks.

There’s a battle brewing for the spot behind center, and while the uncertainty certainly qualifies as a weakness, the hope is that someone jumps out as a viable candidate to make plays both with his arms and his legs this season.

New Mexico 2015-2016 Prediction: 4-8

Look for two very distinct themes to come out of New Mexico this season.

Success in non-conference play, and serious struggles from within the Mountain West.

The Lobos will see five squads that were victorious four times or fewer last season. Not to mention FCS Mississippi Valley State, so getting a Bowl berth isn’t outside the realm of possibility.

But at the same time, we could be looking at a one-win squad from within the conference .

This team will have to wait at least one more year if it’s hoping to go bowling.
