SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Mississippi State Bulldogs

Coach: Dan Mullen
2009 Record: 5-7

Mississippi State Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +10000

Dan Mullen and the Bulldogs of Mississippi State may have only won five games last year, but there was clear improvement and the expectations are slowly rising in Starkville. The Bulldogs lost some of their key contributors from last year’s team, so this year will definitely be an uphill battle.

In the long run, it certainly appears as if Mississippi State has found the man that can turn this team into a legitimate SEC contender.

This season there will be a lot of question marks, especially on the offensive side of the football. Anthony Dixon was a terrific running back, but he is in the NFL now. The Bulldogs led the SEC in rushing last year, but one would expect there will a significant drop off in production from the running back spot this year.

As a whole, the team will need to play fundamental football and not beat themselves, or they could have a long year.

Team Strengths:

The defensive line has plenty of talent to go around. Pernell Mcphee is terrific at getting into the backfield and producing all sorts of problems for the opposing offense. The Bulldogs defensive line should be strong, especially when it comes to rushing the passer.

Chad Bumphis gives this team a real playmaker on offense. Look to see the Bulldogs get the ball in his hands in any way possible this year, as he is clearly their most talented player on the offensive side of the ball.

Chris Relf should prove an upgrade at quarterback over Tyson Lee. Relf may not be a great passer, but he is athletic and he should be a force in the ground game.

Team Weaknesses:

Other than Bumphis, the Bulldogs really don’t have anyone who has proven that they can be a reliable target in the passing game. If this team is going to improve on last season’s win total, they’ll definitely need someone else to step up in the passing game.

The running back position should be a big problem for the Bulldogs this year. Dixon was terrific and their entire offense was based around him. Robert Elliot and Vick Ballard will fight for the starting job, but I’m not sure either of them will be able to perform consistently in this tough league.

The linebackers could have trouble replacing Jamar Chaney’s leadership and his 90 tackles in 2009. This group will have talent, but they need to be more disciplined if they are going to stuff the run in the SEC.

2010-2011 Mississippi State Football Prediction: 4-8

The schedule that the Bulldogs are forced to play in 2010 is as tough as you will find. The loss of Dixon will hurt them badly, and I think this offense will struggle to score points. I could see this team playing some of the best teams tough, but not having enough to get over the top.

Dan Mullen will do a good job at Mississippi State, but this won’t be the year they make a leap in the SEC standings.
