Coach: Houston Nutt
2008 Record: 9-4

Ole Miss is a trendy pick to win the SEC West and scrap Florida in the SEC championship. The stars aligned last season and this team is easily as strong a team to come out of Oxford since Eli Manning was taking snaps for the Rebs.

Former head coach Ed Orgeron didn’t show on-field results, but he recruited superbly and current coach Nutt is enjoying the fruits of that labor.

Quarterback Jevan Snead is making NFL scouts drool from here to Timbuktu. The former Texas signee (he and Colt McCoy were on the same team, yikes!) is 6”3, 215 and could throw a football through an airplane hangar. The Rebels have a couple massive o-lineman, talent sprinkled throughout the offense and a solid kicking game with senior Joshua Shene.

Ole Miss also has players who will swarm to the ball defensively. End Greg Hardy is a pass-rush specialist and troubled (but exceptionally talented) tackle Jerrell Powe will finally look to get on the field.

Ends Hardy and Kentrell Lockett both exceeded eight sacks in 2008.

Team Strengths
Speed, and a belief that this team is here for real. Past years’ recruiting combines with Nutt’s ability to fire up the troops. The Rebs also have a pair of NFL-sized tailbacks in Cordera Eason (5”10, 224 lbs) and Enrique Davis (6”0, 220) who should take some pressure off Snead.

The team also draws a very favorable schedule.

Team Weaknesses
The team loses experience on the offensive line (including Michael Oher, who was the Baltimore Ravens’ first-round pick) and though they are massive, they will be down a notch. In fact, if there’s such thing as ‘too much of a good thing,’ with a pair of tackles tipping the scales at 350 lbs, one worries if they will be nimble enough to handle SEC speed off the edge.

Ole Miss shocked everyone by beating Florida in The Swamp last season. This year, they won’t sneak up on anybody.

The Rebels must play strong, consistent football every week, but this is a balanced team that could win the division, even if this author isn’t as convinced as some other experts out there.

2009 Ole Miss Rebels Record Prediction: 10-3
