Coach: Les Miles
2008 Record: 8-5

The Tigers had a very out-of-character slump year in ’08, especially for a program that makes it an annual tradition to haul in USC-caliber recruiting classes.

We’ll see if LSU can pull off the same magic with smallish, lightly-regarded senior Joe Cox this season.

LSU’s home stadium, ‘Death Valley’ pretty much only explained how Tiger fans felt like watching the team’s shoddy quarterback play and porous defense. This year’s edition should be much improved and, talent-wise, is up there with any program in the country. Were it not for the three-headed monster at tailback of Charles Scott, Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy, the Tiger offense would have been completely useless in 2008. The good news is all three return this season. The pivot play can only improve when throwing to seniors Brandon LaFell, Rich Dickson and top-ranked frosh Reuben Randle.

Rahim Alem and Al Woods should eat people on the defensive line, and junior Chad Jones is special at safety.

Team Strengths
Les Miles always has talent and depth to work with at every position. The team is very adept at recruiting in the Deep South and Florida, and particularly in their home state of Louisiana (virtually every top in-state player wants to be a Tiger). LSU should have a few stand-out players at every positional unit.

Team Weaknesses
We have yet to see sophomore QB Jordan Jefferson get the job done consistently. There are some new faces on the offensive/defensive lines and reliable veteran kicker Colt David is gone. The team also brings in a JUCO at punter with the graduation of Brady Dalfrey.

LSU is worlds better than they were during last season’s 8-5 embarrassment; it is a testament to this program to be able to call 8-5 a lost season. However, LSU also probably has the toughest schedule in the SEC, having to play Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss and Arkansas (UGA, ’Bama and Ole Miss on the road) so it won’t be easy to bounce back.

Regardless, the 2009 squad will pull an extra win or two out.

2009 LSU Tigers Record Prediction: 10-3

No way no how does LSU win the SEC this year. Bama wins it in a landslide. Sorry Tigers fans!
