WAC Conference Football Previews: Louisiana Tech

Head Coach: Sonny Dykes
2009 Record: 4-8

Louisiana Tech Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +150000

Sonny Dykes is the new coach here after Derek Dooley left to take the Tennessee job. The Bulldogs had a strange year in 2009, where their statistics looked quite good, but the record finished at 4-8.

They lost a whole lot of close games and even played Boise State and LSU very tough. This is a team that will have a new look under Dykes, but they have the talent to make a run in the WAC.

The key to this team will likely be finding a quarterback that fits into the system Dykes, and offensive coordinator Tony Franklin will want to run. It will be a big adjustment for the team, as Dooley’s offense was quite conservative, especially by WAC standards.

Team Strengths:

The linebackers may the best in the WAC. Adrien Cole is an absolute beast at this position that the NFL prospects will love, and Jared Dudley is a solid player that does all the dirty work necessary. Add in a youngster with tons of skills, Solomon Randle, and you’ll have a great trio here.

The offensive line is a huge area of strength for the Bulldogs. Rob McGill be playing pro football in the next couple of years, and the entire line is full of veteran players who know their assignments well.

The secondary looks strong, as all four starters have had considerable experience and proven they can get the job done. The two safeties are both hard hitters that get around the field very well.

Team Weaknesses:

Sonny Dykes system should work well in the WAC, but there are some questions as to whether this team has the perfect pieces for the system in 2010. The quarterback spot was held down by Ross Jenkins last year, but Steve Ensminger appears to be more of a spread offense quarterback. Who will quarterback this offense?

The defensive line is the clear weak link of the defense for the Bulldogs. The line has only one returning starter, and they have no one at all who has proven they can get into the backfield consistently.

The line will have to hold their own for the linebackers and secondary to be able to do their damage.

Louisiana Tech 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 7-6

The Bulldogs should certainly finish with a better record than last year, and I would be surprised if they don’t make it to a bowl game in 2010. There is quite a bit of top notch talent on this team. The fact that they have such a solid secondary allows them to hold down many of the top offenses in the WAC.

If a quarterback grasps this system quickly, this team will be very dangerous. Keep an eye on their home games against Fresno State and Nevada, as they will likely be battling for position in the conference.

Things appear to be looking up for the Bulldogs.
