Louisiana-Lafayette will have the most wins in the Sun Belt Conference

Handicapping Sun Belt Conference Football

Louisiana-Lafayette didn’t lose a game in the Sun Belt last year until its final two contests of the year. Lafayette star quarterback Terrance Broadway didn’t play any of the second half due to an injury in their game against rival Louisiana-Monroe.

After leading 21-14 at halftime, Lafayette would go on to lose that game. They were then throttled 30-8 by South Alabama in the season finale. Lafayette shared the Sun Belt title in 2013.

The Ragin’ Cajuns appear to have created even more distance between themselves and the field before this season. Expect them to finish with the most wins in the conference and win the title all alone in 2014.

Reasons why Louisiana-Lafayette will win Sun Belt Conference:

Weak Conference

The Sun Belt has never been a particularly strong conference, but it’s weaker than ever right now. Some of the top teams from the past few years in this conference have moved on to play in a bigger conference.

Now, the Sun Belt has teams like Georgia Southern, New Mexico State, Appalachian State, and Georgia State in the conference. The lack of quality competition certainly makes it easier on a team like Lafayette to win a bunch of games.

No clear weakness on the roster- Every other team in the conference has at least one clear weakness, while Lafayette is a well-rounded team on both sides of the football. That kind of balance makes opponents respect everything that you do, which is huge in crunch time.

Star Quarterback in Broadway

Terrance Broadway is the best player in the Sun Belt. Anytime you have a really good team and you also have the best player in the league under center it is a formula for lots of success.

Quarterback is the most important position on the field, and if you are going to have a star at one spot on the roster this would be the position you’d pick.

Running Game

Alonzo Harris and Elijah McGuire give Lafayette the best backfield in the Sun Belt. Harris is seen as the team’s top running back, but McGuire averaged 8.4 yards per carry last season as well. The two of them run behind the best offensive line in the country. Watch this team at the end of games.

They can simply run the clock down by moving the chains keeping it on the ground every single time.

Schedule

Lafayette gets a nice break in the schedule, playing both South Alabama and Arkansas State on their home field. South Alabama should be the second best team in the conference, and Arkansas State is a really tough place for Sun Belt opponents to play.

Gambling Prediction: 10-2

Look for Louisiana-Lafayette to be a favorite in every Sun Belt game this year.

The trickiest game on the schedule is probably the game at Lousiana-Monroe since they are a rival school. Lafayette will have a difficult time with road trips to Ole Miss and Boise State in the non-conference slate, but that tough preparation will make their Sun Belt games seem that much easier.

This is a veteran-laden team that should win the Sun Belt in 2014.
