No. 17 Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones Week 5 Free Pick

Venue/ Stadium: Jack Trice Stadium, AMES, IA

Last season in Texas’ (3-0) disastrous 7-loss season head coach Mack Brown said that the home loss to Iowa State was the “lowest point” of the season and they can get some revenge against a Cyclones (3-0) team that has won 2 straight games against teams from BCS conferences.

No. 17 Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones Preview

NCAAF lines have the visiting Longhorns as a 9.5-point favorite with a total of 48.

In their last games Iowa State beat Connecticut 24-20 and Texas beat UCLA 49-20. Both teams had a bye week last week so each team should be well rested.

The Cyclones had 3 turnovers last week in the win over UCONN and even though they have yet to lose they have a turnover differential of +5. They cannot turn the ball over against an improved Texas defense that ranks 11th in the nation.

Iowa State’s offense is decent with the nation’s 56th ranked passing offense and 64th ranked rushing offense. Steele Jantz will have to play well and even though he is the 2nd leading rusher for the Cyclones he is only averaging 2.9 yards per carry. The WR combo of Darius Reynolds and Aaron Horne are each averaging over 13 yards per reception.

Texas’ defense is better defending the pass and the run, so the Cyclones have a better chance to win if Shontrelle Johnson (200 yards) can run the ball.

The Iowa State offense is decent, but the bigger key in this game may be their defense. Texas scored 49 points against UCLA in their last game using a balanced attack with 204 passing yards and 284 rushing yards. The Longhorns’ strength is their rushing attack with RB’s Malcolm Brown (264 yards 1 TD) and Foswhitt Whittaker (100 yards 3 TD). Iowa State’s rushing defense only ranks 75th in the nation and they will be in for a long game Texas gains a ton of yards on the ground. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Case McCoy has taken most of the snaps since last season’s starting QB Garrett Gilbert was benched in the 2nd game of the season. He has played well completing 19 of his 25 passes for 225 yards with 2 TD and 0 INT. He will be counted on to manage the game well and not get picked off, but the rushing offense is the key for the Longhorns moving the chains.

Betting Trends

Both Texas and Iowa State have an ATS record of 2-1 and each also has an O/U record of 1-2.

Texas is 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games as a favorite, 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Big 12 games, and they have an Under record of 7-3 in their last 10 games.

Iowa State is 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog, 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games as an underdog of 3.5-10 points, and they have an Under record of 11-4 in their last 15 home games.

Jason’s Pick: Both teams are riding high, but Texas is back to playing good defense and running the ball and that is why they will win this game and cover the 9.5-point spread. I don’t think this will be a very high scoring game so I think the Under is the way to go.
