SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Kentucky Wildcats

Coach: Joker Phillips
2009 Record: 7-6

Kentucky Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

Rich Brooks did a great job with the Kentucky Wildcats football program, and now it is up to Joker Phillips to take them to even higher heights. Kentucky has been getting to bowl games and winning some in the SEC, but they are 0-12 against South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee in the last four years.

Phillips will aim to bring SEC titles and national contenders to Kentucky in his tenure.

This Kentucky Wildcats team has quite a bit of talent, but they are also missing some big pieces. At the skill positions the Wildcats have some guys who are capable of making some big plays in key moments. In 2009, the Wildcats ranked 114th in the nation in passing.

If Kentucky is going to make a major step up as a team, the passing game must take some pressure off the rest of the squad.

Team Strengths:

A major strength of this team is the playmaking combo of Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. The two of them combine to make the best kick and punt return combo in the SEC. The Wildcats have even run a formation where Cobb takes the snap under center because they know he needs to touch the ball often. Locke has great feet and is skilled in the passing game as well.

The defense is full of players with speed and athleticism. They may lack in experience, but they will be able to get around and if they stay in their lanes, they could surprise some teams with their quickness.

Team Weaknesses:

The team had a tremendous offensive line last year, but four of their starters are gone. This offensive line could have trouble protecting the quarterback the way last year’s squad did.

The quarterback spot is fairly weak at Kentucky right now. They don’t have a single guy who compliments Locke and Cobb’s play making ability. Mike Hartline is a gutsy player and Morgan Newton is talented, but both have proven they often make poor decisions with the football.

The defensive front seven is a huge weakness for this Kentucky team. Last year they were last in the SEC in sacks, and they don’t have any major newcomers ready to step in. Without pressure from the front seven, the secondary of the Wildcats will likely get chewed up in SEC play.

2010-2011 Kentucky Football Prediction: 5-7

I think Joker Phillips has a chance to get this Kentucky program turned into a contender, but this won’t be the year. The Wildcats have way too many holes to stack up with the competition in the SEC. The reality is they do have an easy schedule because of missing Alabama and LSU, but I still think they’ll struggle to win five games.

The defense and the lack of a passing game will be two huge problems for the Wildcats in 2010.
