Big 12 2010-2011 Football Previews: KU Jayhawks

Coach: Turner Gill
2009 Record: 5-7

Kansas Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

Mark Mangino is out and Turner Gill is in as the head coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. Turner Gill is a great young coach and he brings a tremendous offensive coordinator in Chuck Long with him. The problem for the Jayhawks is that, at least for this year, there may not be enough for Gill and crew to work with. There is little doubt that this year will be a rebuilding project.

Just a couple years ago the Kansas Jayhawks were in the national title picture for a while and their prolific offense was the primary reason, but sensational quarterback Todd Reesing and both star wide receivers Dezmon Briscoe and Kerry Meier are gone.

The team still has some pieces in place, but there are a ton of holes that must be filled. Sportsbook.com

Team Strengths:

The linebackers should be very solid, led by Drew Dudley. Dudley was second on the team in tackles last year and he’ll have another talented linebacker in Huldon Tharp next to him. One thing to watch is Dudley’s health, he has had shoulder issues, and this team needs him healthy in a big way.

Turner Gill is expected to bring lots of pressure on the defensive side, and they have a great one to do it with in Jake Laptad. Laptad, a defensive end, is a great pass rusher who is already getting plenty of attention from the NFL.

Don’t be surprised if the Kansas defensive ends turn up the heat this year on the opposition.

Team Weaknesses:

The quarterback spot is a real question mark. Reesing was solid here for several years, and now Kansas is left wondering who can fill his shoes. Kale Pick or Jordan Webb will likely get the nod, but don’t be surprised if they struggle.

The defensive secondary is a real problem for the Jayhawks. Kansas gave up 30 points or more in every Big 12 game last year except one, and if they do that again, they’ll lose a whole lot of games this year.

The offensive line is full of returning starters, but they weren’t very good at all last year. There will be no prolific passing game this year, so they’ll need the line to create some holes for their young backs to run through.

2010-2011 Kansas Football Prediction: 6-7

KU benefits in a big way from an easy schedule. There is no Texas or Oklahoma on the schedule and the only tough out of conference game is Georgia Tech.

This team could struggle to beat teams like Baylor and Iowa State on the road this year, but they’ll need to if they want to get back to a bowl game.

I think the easy schedule will help them get to 6-6 and then they’ll lose a bowl game to finish the year one game under the .500 mark.
