Big Ten 2010-2011 Football Previews: Iowa Hawkeyes

Coach: Kirk Ferentz
2009 Record: 11-2

Iowa Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +2500

The Hawkeyes had a tremendous season in 2009. They finished it off with an impressive win over Georgia Tech in the Orange Bowl. All year long the Iowa defense showed just how strong it truly was. On the offensive side it was the line that was creating huge holes and keeping opponents off their quarterback.

This year Iowa should be an extremely good team. The one area where they lost quite a bit of talent is the offensive line.

The schedule is set up to give them a real opportunity to win the Big Ten Conference. Kirk Ferentz has proved that he is one of the best coaches in the land, and discounting this Iowa team in the National Championship picture wouldn’t be wise.

Team Strengths:

The Iowa Hawkeyes defense as a whole should be tremendous, and they will be led by an amazing defensive line. Adrian Clayborn is the biggest star of the bunch, but Karl Klug and the rest of the line will be a force to be reckoned with as well. This is the type of line that will pressure quarterbacks consistently and make life difficult for opposing running games.

The safeties are about as good of a pair as you will find in the entire country. Tyler Sash will be all over the field in every game the Hawkeyes play, and he is a big hitter. Brett Greenwood starts alongside him and he is a very solid fourth year starter.

The receiving corps is extremely talented. With Marvin McNutt and Derrell Johnson-Koullanos they have two receivers who are reliable and can take it the distance every time they touch the ball.

Team Weaknesses:

This team really doesn’t have that many weaknesses, which is why they will be so dangerous. Some count the offensive line as a possible weakness, but I do think they will be solid by the end of the year. The running backs are all talented, but they have a history of getting injured, and they are still young.

The defense as a whole is extremely strong, but the linebackers are definitely a notch down from 2009. Losing a leader like middle linebacker Pat Angerer is a big loss for this team, as is the loss of outside linebacker A.J. Edds.

The Hawkeyes have talent to replace these two, but I think there will some drop off from last year in this unit.

2010-2011 Iowa Football Prediction: 12-1

I’m going to stick my neck out on this one and say I think Iowa will be extremely good this year. The schedule works out very well for them this year as all of their toughest opponents must visit Kinnick Stadium. I think they will lose one Big Ten game, probably to either Ohio State or Wisconsin, but I think this team will remain in the title hunt for the entire season.

Adrian Clayborn will get a whole lot of awards at the end of the year, and this Hawkeyes team will rack up a lot of wins.
