The SEC West has really asserted itself atop the rankings, claiming four of the top-5 spots. A win in their biggest game of the year wasn’t enough for Florida State to re-gain the top spot in the country despite a bye week for Mississippi State.

After a couple shaky weeks Alabama flexed its muscles and routed Texas A&M, helping the Crimson Tide move ahead three spots to No. 4, while Notre Dame’s loss to Florida State dropped the Irish a couple spots to No. 7.

Here’s a look at the Week 9 poll with analysis of what we can expect when the Week 9 poll comes out on Sunday.

1. Mississippi State Bulldogs (6-0, previous: 1)

The Bulldogs enjoyed a well-deserved week off after running the gauntlet in the SEC West with a trio of consecutive games against top 10 opponents. They return for a game against an improving Kentucky squad in Lexington that will likely be tougher than it looks.

2. Florida State Seminoles (7-0, previous: 2)

The Seminoles needed a bit of luck on their side to dispatch of the Irish but they were able to keep the nation’s longest winning streak alive with a victory. They’re off this week before returning for a prime time matchup under the lights on Thursday against Louisville.

3. Ole Miss Rebels (7-0, previous: 3)

Ole Miss continued its domination of weaker opponents by making short work of Tennessee. They’ll have a tough time proving they’re for real in their next game when they make the trip out to Baton Rouge for a visit to Death Valley in a dreaded night game.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide (6-1, previous: 7)

Alabama and Texas A&M have had some classic matchups over the last couple of years, but Saturday’s contest was a real stinker, with the Tide controlling the game from start to finish. Next in their way is a trip to Tennessee where Lane Kiffin will surely hear a little something from the fans.

5. Auburn Tigers (5-1, previous: 6)

Auburn had an off week but likely didn’t enjoy it as they had a week to stew over their loss to Mississippi State. They return to find themselves out of the national top-4 and will take that frustration out on a disappointing South Carolina squad.

6. Oregon Ducks (6-1, previous: 9)

Oregon better than doubled up on Washington on Saturday. The Ducks got their loss out of the way early and are now steadily climbing up the rankings. With the SEC teams set to cut the legs out from underneath one another, the Ducks are in a good spot to steadily creep up and into the national top-4.

7. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (6-1, previous: 5)

The Irish may not have been able to gut out a win in Tallahassee, but they showed enough that they fell only two spots in the AP poll. They’ll get a bye week in Week 9 before returning to a tough road game at Navy.

8. Michigan State Spartans (6-1, previous: 8)

Michigan State didn’t have any trouble getting past Indiana this past week, particularly with the Hoosiers down their quarterback. They’ll be taking on a Michigan team with something to prove on Saturday, so they’ll have something to watch out for.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

9. Georgia Bulldogs (6-1, previous: 10)

Georgia this time needed its offense to come up big to help dispatch of Arkansas. They had this wrapped up by half time even if the final score doesn’t look that way. The Bulldogs are off this week before returning to take on the Florida Gators.

10. TCU Horned Frogs (5-1, previous: 12)

The Horned Frogs made the Cowboys look silly, outscoring Oklahoma State by 33 points in a rout in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs are quickly climbing the national rankings and have Texas Tech in their way next.
