SEC 2010-2011 Football Previews: Georgia Bulldogs

Coach: Mark Richt
2009 Record: 8-5

Georgia Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: +5000

The Georgia Bulldogs didn’t necessarily have a terrible year last season, but it certainly didn’t meet expectations. That is two straight years of disappointment for the Georgia Bulldogs football squad. Just two or three years ago Mark Richt was thought of as one of the fastest rising coaches in the business, but without some improvement soon he’ll start getting heat from the Bulldogs fans.

Joe Cox never performed that well at quarterback, but now it is time to groom in a youngster in Aaron Murray.

The level of quarterback play this team receives is absolutely crucial to its success, because they do have the running backs and the line to make things happen on offense.

The Bulldogs hope that Murray will be able to settle in and manage the offense, while limiting turnovers.

Team Strengths:

The Bulldogs have a solid nucleus of receivers that should help Aaron Murray make the transition as quarterback of this team. A.J. Green is one of the best receivers in the country with his amazing NFL level skills and ideal height. The tight end position will also be a great place for Murray to look as both Orson Charles and Aron White have the potential to hurt defenses over the middle.

The offensive line and the running backs at Georgia are probably the team’s biggest strengths. The line is experienced and as long as they stay healthy, they will plow plenty of holes in the defense. In the backfield, both Caleb King and Washaun Ealey are high quality runners that will wear down the opponent.

The special teams at Georgia are tremendous right now as well. Drew Butler won the Ray Guy award last year and Blair Walsh was a finalist for the Groza award.

Team Weaknesses:

The defensive line of the Georgia Bulldogs needs some work. The team is actually switching to a 3-4 system this season, mainly because the defensive line has been so ineffective. This team needs to stop the run consistently if it hopes to win the SEC East.

How about the turnover margin and penalties? Last year Georgia turned the ball over 28 times, and only forced 12 turnovers. Simply put, this team is fortunate to have gone 8-5 with a horrendous turnover margin like that. They definitely need to force more turnovers on defense this year. In addition, the Bulldogs were flagged for 105 penalties, which was good for sixth in the entire country.

They must limit these mistakes.

The quarterback play of Aaron Murray is a big question for Georgia. If they get some kind of decent passing game going they could be tough, but most of all they need him to stay within the offense.

2010-2011 Georgia Football Prediction: 9-4

This Georgia team should be a little better than the 2009 version. The offensive line is very strong and they should be able to run the football on almost everyone they play. They certainly have the potential to win 10 games or more, but because of their question mark at quarterback, I’ll keep them at nine wins.

The schedule was nice to them as they miss playing both Alabama and LSU this year. Circle your calendar for the October 30th showdown against Florida, because that will likely be the key game for Georgia!
