Coach: Mark Richt
2008 Record: 10-3

This year the Bulldogs must replace the NFL’s first overall draft pick, field general Matt Stafford, which is never a picnic. However, in 2005 Georgia won the SEC title when career backup D.J. Shockley took over the reins from UGA’s all-time passing leader David Greene.

We’ll see if Georgia can pull off the same magic with smallish, lightly-regarded senior Joe Cox this season.

Characteristically, Georgia’s D will win enough SEC battles, with size and speed to burn. Bryan Evans and his 4.3 speed have been moved to free safety, the defensive tackles will feast on ballcarriers and linebacker Rennie Curran is superb. Cox will be tested, no doubt, but he’ll have some nice targets to aim for in sophomore A.J. Green, senior Michael Moore and lanky, big-ticket frosh Marlon Brown.

Tight end Aron White has an athletic, basketball-like frame. The backfield is rammed with top prospects and the O-line should be better.

Team Strengths
The ’backers are big, athletic and angry. They should be taking paint chips off SEC helmets all season. The secondary is full of quick, if undersized players; top corner prospect Branden Smith might start immediately.

It wouldn’t surprise anyone to see WR Green at NFL Pro Bowls in a few seasons. Finally, Mark Richt is an excellent coach.

Team Weaknesses
The loss of running back Knowshon Moreno’s production will hurt. Even though this year’s starter Caleb King is talented, there will likely be a drop-off.

Cox has held a clipboard for a long time, but even in best case scenarios, he isn’t the rocked-armed Stafford.

The 2009 edition of the Dawgs will have a ball-hawking defense and talent at most positions.

However, there is some youth on the offensive line, an untested senior pivot and perhaps most importantly, Georgia plays in the same division as the Florida Gators.

2009 Georgia Bulldogs Record Prediction: 10-3

The Bulldogs have some big holes to fill from last season, but that is the nature of college football. In good programs somebody is always ready to step up and be the next star.

Their season will come down to the Florida game, as Georgia appears to be the only team with a legitimate shot of knocking off the Gators.
