How times have changed for college football fans in the Florida panhandle. There was a time when the ‘Noles and their fans would have been disgusted with a Gator Bowl invite; they should count themselves lucky this year.

The year 2009 has been a story of inconsistency for the Florida State program.
The ‘Noles would win a couple of games back-to-back, only to be embarrassed the following week (a three-game losing streak to USF, Boston College and Georgia Tech was particularly humbling).
The feelings are surely buttressed by long-time head coach Bobby Bowden calling it quits after this game. No one can accuse Florida State of not being able to score. When healthy, QB Christian Ponder has matured into a fantastic weapon, averaging 322 ypg. The running game is lackluster, but Ponder is a great athlete and FSU also showcases a pair of speedy wideouts in Bert Reed and Taiwan Easterling.
The defense has nuggets of young talent (read: LB Nigel Bradham) but hasn’t shown up at all this season. The Mountaineers should be able to exploit FSU’s defense with their balanced yet lethal rushing attack. Running back Noel Devine is a pinball; Ryan Clarke, Jock Sanders and big QB Jarrett Brown can also move the chains on the ground. Defensively, the whole is worth more than the individual parts for WVU, but that doesn’t mean scoring for the ‘Noles won’t rest solely on the shoulders of Ponder.
In 2005, Florida State beat the Mountaineers in the Gator Bowl by double digits.
The ‘Noles must hope a combination of precedent and the desire to send Bowden out on a winning note is enough to overcome a dangerous spread attack.
