Stanford is coming off a disappointing road loss at Notre Dame, where it looked like it had the game wrapped up. The Cardinal will surely want to come out on their home field in Palo Alto on Friday night and set the tone.

Currently sitting at 3-2, the Cardinal are only just still ranked and the narrow 17-14 loss to the Irish definitely dealt a blow to their playoff ambitions.

That doesn’t mean that Stanford won’t want to try and blow out the visiting Cougars on Friday. If anything, the motivation might be a little more acute, thanks to the frustration of dealing with Notre Dame QB Everett Golson’s clutch performance last week.

Don’t be too quick to dump on the Cougars, though. Washington State – though only 2-4 and 1-2 in Pac-12 play – gave visiting Oregon a run for its money earlier in the season. That game against the Ducks proved that Wazzu can dump points on anybody.

But against Stanford, we’re not talking about any old Average Joe defense. The Cardinal rank first in the country in points against, surrendering less than nine per. Interestingly, they run up against a Washington State offense that is first nationally in passing offense (an eye-popping 523 yards per game).

The oddsmakers have Stanford cruising to victory, but it could be an intriguing match-up.

With Washington State, that football team doesn’t run the ball and the defense is Swiss cheese. Yet, QB Connor Halliday has a ridiculous 3,052 pass yards already and 26 TDs through the air.

The Cougars lost what might as well have been a basketball game last week against California, a game that finished 60-59. It truly is a brave new world in college football; Bo Schembechler would be rolling in his grave!

Clearly, Stanford must slow down the aerial fireworks of Halliday and Cougars WRs Vince Mayle and River Cracraft. If any defense is up to the task, it’s the Cardinal.

Stanford QB Kevin Hogan has always been known as a plucky guy that knows how to win, but all of a sudden he has two losses already on the slate in 2014. Hogan must steady the ship and capitalize on a high-yielding Cougars “D”.

It doesn’t get easier for Stanford, with ranked teams Arizona State, Oregon, Utah and UCLA still to come on the schedule. That makes this game all the more important to get in its back pocket, if the Cardinal intend to play in a good bowl game this season.

4* Play on Stanford 35, Washington State 17

I like the stout Stanford defense to find a way to disrupt the aerial bonanza that’s been happening in small-town Washington this year.
