Michigan fans must be kicking themselves right now. Perhaps it’s odd to start a Pac-12 game preview talking about the Maize and Blue, but they ousted former head coach Rich Rodriguez, and while their program has been a disaster, all Rich-Rod has done is move west to Arizona and establish an unbeaten, #10-ranked Wildcats team. Pretty impressive stuff.

Once again, despite looking good early on, the Trojans of Southern California have found ways to slip up. Last week was a 38-34 loss to Arizona State; this week the Trojans hope they don’t suffer a similar fate at the hands of ASU’s cross-state counterpart.

There was definitely celebration in Tucson a week ago: The Wildcats upset mighty #2-ranked Oregon en route to their fifth straight win and an unbeaten record.

Many people predicted Arizona to be a team on the rise, but few believed it would start as early as this season. Rodriguez has his players playing fast, inspired football and upgrades to the campus and facilities are starting to bring in some quality recruits.

For USC to avoid further embarrassment, it must stop having rollercoaster efforts from the defense. The unit will play a great game, like the 13-10 victory over Stanford, and then give up 37 points to crappy Boston College and 38 points to the Sun Devils last week.

There are a couple of defenders that should be impact players in the NFL – DT Leonard Williams and LB Hayes Pullard, we’re looking your way – so it’s confusing why the Trojans’ “D” has these lapses.

You can’t put the losses on QB Cody Kessler, he has almost 1,400 yards passing and zero INTs. Similarly, RB Javorius Allen has racked up 576 yards on the ground. So the offense will get its points; it’s up to the defenders to stifle Arizona’s quick-strike attack.

Redshirt freshman QB Anu Solomon has really taken control of ‘Zona’s offense, and it’s reflected in the Wildcats’ 350 pass yards per game and ranking in the Top 25 in scoring offense.

The Wildcats have a very deep WR corps, so they can hurt you in a multitude of ways. The Southern Cal secondary must be on notice in this road game, because if they aren’t Solomon will find ways to burn the Trojans.

Still, things almost seem too good to be true in Tucson right now, and USC has a way of elevating its game just when you think it’s time to pack up camp.

4* Play on USC 41, Arizona 35

I envision Kessler, Allen, WR Nelson Agholor and company having a strong road performance, and carrying the Trojans back to Los Angeles with a win.
