Early on Akron was looking at a breakthrough season but that notion has long since passed. Now they need to close strong just to get to .500 and a potential bowl game.

Massachusetts

Not all midweek MAC games are going to be full of action but this one between UMass and Akron might not be all that bad.

Sure both of these teams are not very good but the Minutemen have shown some strides this season and I bet you didn’t know that they have the 6th best passing attack in college football… I know I didn’t.

That attack is in part due to necessity but it also means that we should have an exciting game on our hands to kick off kind of a dull week.

The UMass offense led by QB Blake Frohnapfel scores a respectable 30ppg. The team would be closer to .500 if they could actually stop someone every once in a while but the program seems to be making baby steps towards respectability.

Last year they lost to the Zips by just a point at home. I am not sure they can keep this one that close but within the +7 they are right now is reasonable.

Akron

The Zips lost their fourth game in a row a couple of weeks ago and now need to win out to reach that magic level of bowl eligibility – that is is anyone wants them.

Usually when a team from the MAC knocks off a Major Conference team like the Zips did in beating Pittsburgh it is a really good indicator but in this case it was just a fluke.

It is looking more and more like the Zips are just a run of the mill MAC team. Nothing more, nothing less.

These teams are an interesting contrast because the strength of the Zips is on the defensive end. In fact they are just terrible on offense averaging only 21ppg.

On D they are solid across the board so if they can hold off Frohnapfel they will have a chance of winning.

Still I don’t like giving up so many points when teams have trouble scoring. Sure they get to face a weak UMass defense but that isn’t alway a cure.

NCAAF Handicapping Trends:

  • Minutemen are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a ATS win.
  • Minutemen are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf.
  • Minutemen are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • Zips are 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
  • Zips are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games on fieldturf.
  • Under is 4-0 in Zips last 4 games after allowing more than 40 points in their previous game.

NCAAF Prediction:  UMass +7

I think this may be the first time I have ever predicted a UMass win and have to admit that makes me a little nervous.

NCAAF Score prediction:  UMass 24 – Akron 20

The value is definitely with the visitors though.
