South Carolina

The Gamecocks entered the season with a top 10 rankings and a string of back to back to back 11-2 seasons. Now they are heading to Auburn looking like they might barely become bowl eligible.

There are a lot of reasons they have underperformed but this team is still an enigma as they have two very good wins against East Carolina and Georgia. Despite Spurrier’s reputation this team has been led by defense the last few seasons and this year it has evaporated.

Dylan Thompson has been more than good enough at QB but he can’t stop the other team from scoring. His numbers are not quite where Connor Shaw was a year ago but you can’t put it all on him for the team’s struggles. The same can be said of Mike Davis.

He has not exploded this season but he is a consistent threat and has rushed for more than 100 yards in his last three games.

Auburn

The Tigers have had but one stumble, losing on the road against top ranked Mississippi State. They are in the thick of it but this is their last easy game, save a week off against FCS Furman before the annual Iron Bowl. This year’s team is neither as lucky or as good as last year though it is has been positive to see the development of QB Nick Marshall. The running game has not been gashing teams as much though so you have to wonder whether it is a good trade off.

Now don’t get me wrong about Marshall, he is not Marcus Mariotta throwing the ball, but with the addition of D’haquille Williams in the fold they have an ability to feel more confident when they need a big play in the passing game. The offense is not nearly the juggernaut it was a year ago. They are better than average and their defense is still a lot better than people expect.

NCAA Football Week 9 Prediction: Auburn -17.5

Pre-season I would have been all over South Carolina in an underdog role here they have done nothing this season to inspire that kind of confidence.

4* FREE NCAAF Score prediction: Auburn 47 – South Carolina 19

I hate to give up so many points but that is the wiser play.
