In a fledgling conference, this game has quickly become a marquee match-up. Heisman candidate Ameer Abdullah and the ‘Huskers travel East to do battle with the Spartans of Michigan State.

The visiting Cornhuskers rank seventh nationally in points for (over 45 per game) and third in rush yards (almost 355 per) thanks to the stellar running of Heisman Trophy candidate Ameer Abdullah and good supplementary scrambling from QB Tommy Armstrong Jr.

The onus will be on the Spartans’ defense to slow down Nebraska’s running attack in front of their green-clad home fans.

After a Week 2 scare against lowly McNeese State, the ‘Huskers have been thrashing opponents thanks to the legs of the aforementioned duo and the pass-catching of WRs Kenny Bell (a sure NFL contributor in the future) and Jordan Westerkamp.

It will be a tricky offense to contain.

Lucky for Michigan State, it is well-versed in tricky offensive attacks. The 3-1 Spartans suffered a tough loss at the hands of the Oregon Ducks, a game against a premier team where MSU looked good in the first half before Oregon blew it out in the second.

The reality is: Ole “Sparty” gave up 46 points to the Ducks and still MSU ranks in the upper third in the nation in points against (only yielding 20 per game). This is a defense that usually brings its lunchbox despite losing a glut of NFL talent over the past couple of seasons.

Michigan State’s offense is led by QB Connor Cook, who’s been a steadying force for a program dealing with getting to an elite status and staying there. Wide receiver Tony Lippett (421 receiving yards, six TDs) has also been a stud.

With the program down the road in Ann Arbor a complete mess and the occasional hiccup from Ohio State, now is as good a time as any to grab the Big Ten Conference with both hands.

Nebraska knows this too. If Abdullah continues to lead the Cornhuskers to wins against tough competition – with this weekend’s game being first and foremost – he could be a slam-dunk Heisman pick. He’s an elite back that has earned his status at the collegiate level.

If things are firing on all cylinders for the Spartans on both sides of the ball, they should win this game. They only need to slow the running of Abdullah to have a marked advantage over the visitors.

If the visiting RB “only” ran for, say, 100 yards and a score, MSU should consider than a net win.

If that happens, you’ll also be marking it down as a literal win in the box score.
