This is a big game in terms of jockeying in the Big 12 Conference late in the season.

With two losses, Oklahoma is likely out of the contest for the FBS playoff, but there’s still plenty on the line in Norman midday on Saturday.

Dealing with the Sooners faithful in Memorial Stadium is an unenviable prospect, but the visiting Bears have the top scoring offense in the entire nation.

Baylor puts up an absurd 50.4 points per game on average; Art Briles’s offense is simply relentless.

Bears QB Bryce Petty was considered a Heisman candidate before Baylor’s loss to West Virginia a couple of weeks ago; he might re-emerge on the list with a strong finish in Waco.

Baylor is so dangerous offensively because anyone can beat you. Running back Shock Linwood has 777 rush yards and 10 TDs, while underclassmen receivers K.D. Cannon and Corey Coleman have combined for 1,286 yards and 13 scores.

Petty runs the attack with aplomb and when the Bears have the ball they move, move, move. Not unlike Chip Kelly’s scheme with the Philadelphia Eagles, Baylor’s attack will test the conditioning of opposing defenses.

Oklahoma has to think it is up to the task. The Sooners score in bunches also and combine it with a stingy “D”.

The home team’s calling card in running the ball. The Sooners rank 24th in the nation with almost 232 rush yards per contest. The work is spread equitably between 243-lb freshman Samaje Perine (767 yards, 11 TDs) and Alex Ross (420, 3). Both options are bruising runners, and Ross offers a bit of breakaway speed also.

When Oklahoma flings the ball, it often goes to junior Sterling Shepard, who is flirting with a 1,000-yard campaign. However, Shepard suffered a groin injury last week and his status is Questionable for the Baylor game.

Ever since the Robert Griffin Era, the Bears have ceased to be a pushover in the Big 12. Baylor is not to be trifled with, especially if the offense is humming on all cylinders.

Currently at 7-1 and 4-1 within the conference, Baylor stands to really deflate its season with a loss at OU. The Sooners can play a little more loose, as the expectations have already lessened somewhat.

Free 4* Play: Oklahoma 45, Baylor 41

Because of the different pressure that’s involved for the two clubs, it is enough for me to believe that Oklahoma will protect its turf in what will be a close – but high-scoring – contest.
