Ohio State is looking better and better but they shouldn’t be overlooking Penn State. Though it is hard not to after recent struggles.

Ohio State

Ohio State has to keep pace with Michigan State, who they will play in a couple of weeks, to be able to achieve their goals this season.

There is no likely scenario of B10 team getting into the playoffs with more than one loss and their stumble against Virginia Tech at home does not look great given the Hokies play afterwards. At the same time OSU seems to be picking up steam.

Since that loss they have dominated, winning all four by at least 22 points. All ATS winners too.

As their play has improved quarterback J.T. Barrett has really come on as well. Since the loss to VT he has completed more than 70% of his passes and has just one interception. He is not the running threat that Braxton Miller was but is probably the better overall player (it will be interesting to see what happens next season).

It is a contrast in styles but there is a nice duel with Penn State’s QB.

Penn State

After a very promising start Penn State has lost two in a row. I wouldn’t call them terrible losses but losing to Northwestern at home and to a desperate Michigan team would hardly qualify as quality. The really disturbing part is that the offense just isn’t there – they have scored more than 26 points just once all season (against UMass).

It is hard to win games anywhere when you are putting up less than 20 points, a total they might not get too this week.

Christian Hackenberg might be an NFL QB one day but he hasn’t looked like it this season. In half of his games he is completing less than 60% of his passes and only once all season long has he thrown more TDs than interceptions. Having a running game ranked 121st doesn’t help but either way he has underperformed.

The only way they stay in this one is if he is near perfect. The defense is solid but not quite good enough.

Right now it looks like that the loss to the Hokies was just a blip for OSU.

They have been roaring lately and this is a decent spot.
