Although the Utes and Trojans have met nine times previously, this marks the first meeting between the two schools since the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl, which was won by Utah 10-6.

The Trojans first game of the 2011 season was sloppy to say the least, and they fell in the rankings thanks with their less-than impressive outing against Minnesota in Week 1.

Now they must face new Pac-12 opponent Utah in who is coming off a strong showing against Montana State in their first game of the season walking away with 27-10 victory.

USC running back Mark Tyler will be back on the field for the Trojans after being reinstated over the week. Tyler brings the sort of explosive running style that was missing in USC’s first game against the Golden Gophers, and will do wonders for Matt Barkley and the passing game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Barkley did put on a decent display in his first of the year, completing 34 of 45 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. But I’m sure if you asked him, he wasn’t happy with how his offense looked for the majority of the game, and Tyler is exactly what they need at this point.

USC’s offense will be facing a very strong Utah front seven, though, but one would be hard pressed to think that they will be able to stop Tyler and Barkley.

Offensively, Utah has some very dangerous weapons as well, mainly junior running back John White IV.

White looked great in the team’s first game, carrying the ball 19 times for 150 yards and a touchdown, but will face a far better defense this week.

These teams match up well against each other, and it will likely be a hard fought game through four quarters.

NCAA Gambling Trends:

Under is 10-3 in USC last 13 games in September.
USC are 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games in September.
USC are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games on grass.

Matt’s Prediction: Utah 20, USC 17 –

USC is arguably the better team overall, but Utah wants this game more. Expect Utah to fight for every inch on Saturday as they get a win. If Tyler can work the Utah front seven into submission, then USC is likely to put up some points, but their defense just hasn’t shown that they have relearned how to tackle.
