After being demolished by the Stanford Cardinal in the first week of the season, the San Jose State Spartans will head south to face the UCLA Bruins who will be trying desperately to stop from falling to 0-2 for the second time in as many seasons.

The biggest story line going into this matchup is the possibility of UCLA not having junior quarterback Kevin Prince after he went down with a concussion early in the first in their 38-34 loss to Houston in Week 1.

It seems the Bruins are once again back on the quarterback carousel as replacement, Richard Brehaut, may likely get the nod in this weekend’s contest. The junior play caller played well, but couldn’t get the job done late in the game despite going 17-of-26 for 264 yards and two touchdowns. UCLA never led, but Brehaut nearly brought his team back from a 31-14 deficit.

If Prince does indeed miss this game, UCLA will be in a tough place to start the season, especially if they lose this Saturday.

San Jose State on the other hand, is primed for a victory against UCLA, and if they can just get a little bit out of their starting San quarterback Matt Faulkner who made his debut last week and completed 11-of-21 passes for 161 yards, they will have a great chance to win this game. The most important piece for UCLA will be running back Johnathan Franklin. Franklin looked like a beast in the team’s first game, rushing for 128 yards and a touchdown. If he can replicate any resemblance of that, UCLA is far and away the best team in the matchup.

The tale of this game will be how both teams respond to their Week-1 failures.

If UCLA’s defense can rebound from facing Houston’s fast-paced attack led by quarterback Case Keenum, Faulkner’s inexperience should by a blessing for UCLA defenders.

Matt’s Prediction: UCLA 28, San Jose State 14 –

When it’s all said and done, UCLA is the better team with the better coaching staff and they are likely to come out on top. The Spartans just don’t seem to have anything they can throw at a team from the Pac-12 that will make in difference, and I expect this game to get pretty ugly fast.

However, I don’t think the Bruins are good enough to be a three-touchdown favorite against anyone right now.
