Clemson hits the road in this top 25 ACC match up where they have suffered both their losses this season, both of which were against top 15 opponents.  Georgia Tech will look to extend it’s three game win streak to four on Senior Day.

Clemson

Five-Star Freshman QB Deshaun Watson returns from his broken hand injury to try and help bolster a very flat Clemson offense.

Waston’s replacement, Cole Stoudt, stood in for three games and managed to lead the Clemson offense to seven touchdowns over that span.  Cole Stoudt did win all three starts, but in less than stellar fashion.

Before his injury, QB Deshaun Watson threw for 1,176 yards and 12 touchdowns in the six games he started.  His arm isn’t the only threat the Georgia Tech defense will have to look out for as Waston’s mobility has been what Clemson has lacked as of late.

Prior to Deshaun Watson’s injury, Clemson was averaging 40 points a game.  With Stoudt under center, Clemson saw their points per game stumble to just 22.

The Tiger defense has been the backbone of this team lately with the offensive struggles.  The Clemson defense has allowed only 18.4 points per game (12th).  The secondary will have to pick up the slack in the first half as Senior safety Robert Smith was ejected for targeting a defenseless receiver in the second half of the Wake Forest game last week.

Clemson’s rush defense is fourth in the nation and are the best at getting off the field on third down.  On the flip side of this, Georgia Tech’s triple option offense is second in the country in rushing and leads the all FBS teams in third-down conversions. Clemson will look to put Georgia Tech in long 3rd down situations and force Tech QB Justin Thomas to beat them with his arm.

Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech’s rushing attack is led by a dual QB backfield.  Starting QB Justin Thomas leads Tech with 781 rushing yards.   His backup, QB Tim Byerly, has found the end zone seven times this season.  The Yellow Jackets offense averages 335.6 yards (3rd) on the ground and 38.8 points per game (13th).

The offensive back field will get stronger this week as RB Zach Laskey returns from a shoulder injury.  Laskey rushed for 5 touchdowns and caught 1 before going down with his injury.  He should see most snaps, but will share some with RB Synjyn Days.

Days has rushed for 100 yards in three straight games and has gained confidence from head coach Paul Johnson.

While the Yellow Jackets offense will have it’s own battle in the trenches with the Clemson defense, who allows just over 90 yards per game on the ground, the defense must step up and contain Deshaun Watson.

The Tech defense is at best average, allowing 25.9 points per game (63rd).

  • Tigers are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 conference games.
  • Over is 4-1 in Yellow Jackets last 5 games in November
  • Home Team is 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings.

With QB Deshaun Watson coming back for the Tigers and the Yellow Jackets offense running over defenses, this game has the potential to be a shootout.  Clemson’s offense should make some explosive plays both with the arm of Watson and his legs.

Play: Clemson 41, Georgia Tech 38.

This game could come down to who has the ball last.
