Western Michigan

The Broncos had the biggest turnaround of any college football program this year. They went from 1-11 last season to 8-4 this season. This year coach P.J. Fleck’s team missed the MAC championship by just a single game. Western Michigan is seeking its first bowl win in program history, the Broncos are currently 0-5.

Western Michigan has two main weapons on offense, sophomore wide receiver Corey Davis and freshman running back Jarvion Franklin. Davis is tied for fourth in the nation with 12 touchdowns and has had seven games of 100+ receiving yards. He also ranks 9th in the nation with 1,232 receiving yards.

Franklin has had a monster year as a freshman, winning the MAC Offensive Player of the Year. He ranks 9th in the nation with 1,525 rushing yards and has accounted for 24 of the Broncos 28 rushing touchdowns. The only person to rush for more touchdowns was Heisman finalist Melvin Gordon.

Coach Fleck will have his team ready to play, especially after their season finale loss to Northern Illinois which caused the Broncos to miss out on a trip to the conference championship.

Western Michigan will look to avenge their previous bowl loss in 2011 when they lost 37-32 to Purdue.

The Broncos are also tied for most wins against the spread at 10, making them the most profitable pick on the season.

Air Force

Just like Western Michigan, Air Force also had a huge turnaround year. This season they improved from 2-10 to 9-3. They racked up impressive wins against rival service academies Army and Navy. The Falcons also upset two touchdown favorite Boise State while forcing seven turnovers.

Air Force enters this game winning five of their last six and taking down Colorado State and their nine game win-streak.

Running back Jacobi Owens has been the backbone of the offense averaging 5.2 yards per carry and rushing for over 1,000 yards. Kale Pearson has proved to be a dual-threat quarterback rushing for almost 700 yards and throwing for 14 touchdowns and roughly 1,500 yards.

The running game has been the Falcons biggest strength, averaging almost 275 yards per game on the ground. Owens and Pearson are mostly responsible for those yards, ranking them 8th in the country at rushing.

If the Air Force want to leave the Potato Bowl victorious, they must get big plays from star safety Weston Steelhammer. Steelhammer is tied for seventh in the nation in interceptions, he grabbed three of his six picks in the huge win over Boise State. Linebacker Jordan Pierce has also been very active on the defensive side.

Pierce has racked up a team-leading 107 tackles and five sacks.

NCAA Football Handicapping Trends:

  • Broncos are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
  • Broncos are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
  • Broncos are 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a S.U. loss.
  • Toal has gone UNDER is 6 of last 9 Air Force games.
  • Air Force is 4-1 ATS in its last five games.
  • Air Force is 5-1 S.U. in its last six game.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Both programs come into this game with their heads held high and playing their best football of the season. I think both teams believe that being in a bowl game is a victory in itself, but would love nothing more than to end their turnaround year on a high note. These two teams matchup very well against each other and this will be a great, close game to watch.

4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Western Michigan Money Line

If you have been following college football betting all season long you know about Western Michigan. They have been covering spreads and winning games the whole year and I don’t expect anything to be different in this one. Look for Western Michigan to have a big game offensively, led by freshmen Jarvion Franklin.
