Ole Miss

In a battle of true Deep South football programs, the Rebels should be quaking in their boots this week travelling to Tuscaloosa. Alabama lost last week against South Carolina and the Tide is probably surging. It hasn’t been a season to remember so far for the Mississippians, with losses to Jacksonville State and Vanderbilt. All conventional wisdom says that seeing a similar fate would be plausible this week in hostile territory.

Still, Ole Miss must throw all it can at vaunted ’Bama. Transfer QB Jeremiah Masoli has played OK, but he isn’t having a season like he had last year at Oregon. One must say he’s been characteristically strong outside the pocket, but the bulk of the rushing duties are left to junior RB Brandon Bolden, is on pace to crack 1,000 yards and double-digit TDs. The only receiving target that inspires fear in a secondary is senior Markeith Summers. The Rebs’ defense has been simply lit up to this point of the season.

Sure, Masoli has the talent to make a couple flash plays and Bolden will punch the clock, but there probably won’t be a ton of cheering in Oxford, MS this Saturday.

Alabama

Just when the Crimson Tide looked impregnable, they dropped a game by two touchdowns to South Carolina. Coach Nick Saban and his clan will probably want to rebound dramatically, to show that ’Bama is still the nation’s top dog.

Alabama tried to pass too much last week; if the Tide get back to the crushing running game that won them five straight, they should see a lot more success and Ole Miss should be goosed. One really can’t say enough about the RB duo of Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson – it’s something special that college football fans are privileged to witness. They are both hovering around 400 yards, seven yards per tote and five scores. If they are used more often – and with Alabama’s offensive line – those numbers will only catapult.

Don’t be mistaken, QB Greg McElroy is a winner that usually gets the job done; last week’s loss was his first since before he entered high school. He doesn’t (and indeed no one in Tide country), want a repeat of last week’s ugliness, particularly against a somewhat piddling Ole Miss squad.

The Pick: The lines have Alabama as more than 20-point favorites and the reality could be more abusive than that. Look for a decisive win and plenty of bedtime prayers for programs like Ohio State and Boise State to slip up somewhere along the way.
