Troy

In the decidedly piss-poor Sun Belt Conference, Troy has had a pedestrian season by its standards. Its 5-4 record thus far still is good for second in the conference, but the Trojans are usually clear-cutting through the likes of Arkansas State and Louisiana-Monroe.

The Trojans have had a fairly socialist output of offense this season from the likes of QB Corey Robinson, RBs DuJuan Harris and Shawn Southward and WRs Jerrel Jernigan and Jason Bruce. Perhaps the Soviets weren’t altogether out to lunch; using this formula Troy sits at 13th in the nation in passing yards (296 per) and 30th in the nation in points scored (33.2 per). Defensively, there’s been some meltdowns at the hands of teams like Oklahoma State and… (loosens collar) Florida International. Obviously, not the same story of success.

Troy’s efficient attack makes them competitive against most opponents and definitely those of Sun Belt and Conference-USA caliber, but South Carolina at home like presents too daunting a test.

South Carolina

After a season-defining win versus Florida last week, freshman RB Marcus Lattimore proved he is a game-carrying, bell cow tailback among the conference’s elite. He rushed 40 times for 212 yards and three scores en route to the Gamecocks taking a stranglehold of the SEC East.

Additionally, in recent weeks the SC defense has done a great job of tightening the leaks we saw at times earlier in the season. With a notable hiccup against Arkansas’ frequent flier act, the Gamecocks have allowed no more than 24 points to Tennessee, Florida or Alabama. Pretty impressive.

Junior pivot Stephen Garcia won’t knock your socks off with his numbers, but he gets the job done more often than not. The sum total of Steve Spurrier’s kids this season is enough to lead the (weaker) SEC East division, enough to punch their weight in the conference at large and certainly enough to handle a Trojans team in Columbia.

The Pick: After such a crucial statement made last week, SC could enter this week’s match-up with a questionable intensity level. Even if the Gamecocks aren’t firing at 100%, they probably still have enough horsepower to handle Troy. Yet, though SC should win, in a potential hangover from last week, they might not cover the spread.

Troy vs. (17) South Carolina Score Prediction: Troy 17 South Carolina 27
