Eastern Michigan

At 1-9, is it fair to say it hasn’t been the best season for the Eagles? EMU can run the ball (currently sitting at 43rd in the nation with 167 yards per game) and do basically nothing else, offensively or defensively. Running backs Alex Gillett and Dwayne Priest present an effective tandem, but other than that, you may as well be playing a board game in Ypsilanti.

The Eagles surrender nearly 44 points per game, good for dead last in the FBS. They’ve given up 52 to Vanderbilt (not exactly a major conference juggernaut), 52 to Central Michigan and 73 to Ohio State. If Eastern Michigan’s defensive co-ordinator stays employed in the off-season, it is an insult to athletics. Yet more embarrassing, current head coach Ron English used to be the defensive co-ordinator at Michigan, under Lloyd Carr. Clearly there are some major structural problems on defense that go beyond a dearth of talent.

If there is any good news, it’s that Buffalo isn’t any good either, so the Eagles have as good a chance as they’ve had all season to eke out a win. But to the few EMU fans there are left: don’t hold your breath.

Buffalo

The Bulls are doing their best to emulate the output of the major league Bills across town – losing in every which way and limping to the couple wins they do get. Really, the program hasn’t been the same since former head coach Turner Gill bolted for Kansas.

As inept as Eastern Michigan is on the defensive side of the ball, UB matches it on offense. The Bulls’ attack ranks last in the FBS; they can’t even manage two touchdowns a game. The only player on the unit that has done anything remotely eyebrow-raising is junior WR Marcus Rivers. He leads the team with 44 receptions for 617 yards (good for 14 a clip) and at 6”3, 209, looks like a potential Day 2 pro prospect.

Indicative of the bumbling MAC, with one conference win Buffalo actually sits in the middle of the pack in the MAC East division (or, at least, above Bowling Green and Akron). After its “test” against Eastern Michigan, Buffalo plays Akron to finish the season, so at least the Bulls get a chance to finish the season strong.

The Pick: Eastern Michigan should theoretically be able to control the ball and the clock with Gillett and Priest, but even Buffalo should be able to put a few scores up on EMU. Maybe home field advantage should help and it’s the case of the better of two really bad teams here. Buffalo should pull this one out.

Eastern Michigan vs. Buffalo Score Prediction: Eastern Michigan 21, Buffalo 24 (OT)
