Georgia

It’s been an up-and-down year for the Bulldogs, but still weak by their standards. Georgia was 1-4 going into early October, but things have turned around since, with an overtime loss to Florida the only blemish on its record recently.

Star receiver A.J. Green did not play until the fifth week of the season, but still has 32 receptions for 510 yards and seven majors. Lanky senior Kris Durham has helped to pick up the slack, but he too has been fighting injuries. Through it all, freshman QB Aaron Murray has played well, hucking for 2,307 yards and 18 TDs.

The stats are fairly deceiving in Athens; despite hovering near the nation’s Top 25 in points for (  and points against (19.7), the team only sits at .500. The squad also faces perhaps its most daunting test yet in Auburn. An upset would certainly get some optimism churning and keep a bowl bid alive while a loss is more fodder for an enigmatic football team.

Auburn

Despite it being clear that no one has outplayed Tigers QB Cam Newton this season, he is dealing with a wave of controversy this week with news breaking about potential recruiting malpractice and NCAA rules violations. Aren’t we all sick of hearing this already?

If you think Newton chose to transfer to Auburn because of its stellar sociology program, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.

Either way, Newton’s Heisman-caliber season continues unabated. His veteran offensive line, with the likes of Ryan Pugh and Lee Ziemba, are experts at creating the time and plowing the lanes that Newton needs to operate; what they don’t do, Newton can free-lance the rest.

One strange thing is that Auburn usually hangs its hat on defense, and it really hasn’t been there this season (allowing 356 yards per game, 54th in the FBS and eighth in the SEC). The likes of Murray, Green, Durham and RB Washaun Ealey should be able to gouge the Tigers’ D. The challenging thing for Auburn’s opposition this season is though they can score on the Tigers, Auburn out-guns you every time.

Perhaps all the controversy and allegations rattle Newton this week, but that remains to be seen and frankly, seems unlikely.

The Pick: Georgia certainly is capable of scoring on Auburn and generating some exciting plays, but Auburn should be focused at home, this close to the finish line of an unbeaten season. The possibility remains that Newton is unnerved or the Tigers are caught looking ahead to the Nov. 26 tilt at Alabama, but it doesn’t feel right betting against the best player in the country.

Georgia vs. (2) Auburn Score Prediction: Georgia 27 Auburn 35
