Connecticut gave Boise State a real run for its money last week. The Huskies trailed by only three points in the fourth quarter before their mistakes finally caught up with them and the Broncos ran away with the game, finishing out with a 38-21 victory thanks to a pair of touchdowns in the final 10 minutes of the game, including a 50-yard interceptions return, the team’s second defensive touchdown of the game.

A positive for the team has to be the play of quarterback Chandler Whitmer, who completed 16-of-29 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. The team needs to do a better job of keeping him upright as he was sacked eight times by the Broncos.

The biggest step forward for the Huskies this season has been the play of the defense under first year head coach Bob Diaco, who comes over from Notre Dame.

While the team’s offense remains a work in progress, Diaco has already began to turn things around on defense.

Boise State came to town averaging 30.5 first downs and 537.5 yards of total offense through their first two games against solid competition, but they were limited to 13 first downs and 292 yards by the Huskies.

The notable line came from Broncos standout running back Jay Ajayi, who was limited to just 39 yards on 18 carries, while no one on the Broncos picked up a double-digit run.

Factor in the two defensive touchdowns and that the third came on another turnover in which Boise State started with the ball on UConn’s side of the field and it could be a long day for the South Florida offense.

The South Florida offense has leaned heavily on running back Marlon Mack, and if UConn can limit his output the way they did with Ajayi a week ago, the Bulls will be in trouble.

FREE Connecticut vs. South Florida ATS Pick:

Neither side has a lot to hang their hats on in the early going this season, but UConn has certainly shown more and has reason to believe they can come away with a big win on the road to open their conference schedule.

The Bulls are 5-21-1 ATS in their last 27 home games, while the Huskies are 4-1 ATS in their last five conference games.

The under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these teams, and 14-5 in South Florida’s last 19 games overall.
