Week 2: Spartans vs #5 Tigers Odds

College football Week 2 betting action sees the San Jose Spartans taking on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Al. Cappers Picks provides free NCAA football handicapping tips all season long.

Both San Jose State and Auburn enter this contest 1-0, but only the latter enters as a big favorite. The Tigers are the No. 5 team in the country, and chances are, they’ll walk away with a big win in this one barring a massive upset.

The biggest question is this one is: Can Auburn cover the spread? They’re favorites to win for a reason, but a 33-and-a-half point spread is a lot for any team to cover — even the No. 5 team in the coutnry.

San Jose State

San Jose State looked good in its first game of the 2014 college football season.

[dfads params=’groups=63738&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

It scored an impressive 42 points, which was good enough for the 34th-best mark in the nation, and it got work done on the other side of the ball, holding its opponent to 10 points — the 10th-best mark in the nation.

The only problem? It was facing North Dakota. The Auburn Tigers are a different beast, and that’s going to present a major challenge for this team entering Week 2.

At this point in the process, San Jose’s strategy has to revolve around slowing down the time of possession. Quick three-and-outs aren’t going to do this squad any good, and conversely, allowing the Tigers’ offense to run the score up will be as problematic as anything that could happen come Saturday.

San Jose State would be smart to run the ball, which unfortunately is not its strong suit. Look for this one to get ugly early, making the Spartans’ only hope a pulling of the starters early in the fourth quarter.

#5 Auburn

The Auburn Tigers, like the San Jose Spartans, found success in Week 1. They managed to collect 293 yards through the air, which was good enough for 35th in the country, and 302 yards on the ground, which was good enough for 18th in the country. That totaled for 45 points in the opening game of the 2014 season, which was good enough for 25th in the nation.

Also like San Jose State, the level of competition was far from elite. The Arkansas Razorbacks aren’t exactly a playoff contender, but they’re at least an SEC opponent.

At this juncture, the only question entering this matchup is whether or note Auburn can cover the spread. If you’re thinking the Tigers will actually lose this game, you’re either delirious or wearing some serious blue and yellow goggles while living in San Jose.

Expect this one to be a blowout.

Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction

Don’t expect any major shocks in this one. Will San Jose keep it close? You bet. But not anywhere near the total score — just in the spread. Take San Jose if you think the Tigers will let up in the fourth, but even their second- and third-string players will have a field day in this one.
