Week 1: Owls vs Cornhuskers Lines

College Football Week 1 betting action sees the No. 22 Nebraska Cornhuskers taking on the Florida Atlantic Owls on Aug. 30, at Memorial Stadium. Cappers Picks provides free College football handicapping tips all season long.

The Cornhuskers will look to start their 2014 campaign in much the same fashion as in 2009, when they routed Florida Atlantic 49-3 in the only previous meeting between the two schools.

Nebraska

Nebraska (2013: 9-4) hasn’t dropped a home opener since 1985, and have their sights set on another postseason berth as well as a Big Ten title.

However, the question is whether quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. can deliver, or will it not matter with Nebraska’s pounding rushing attack led by Ameer Abdullah — the nation’s top returning rusher

Abdullah turned down entering the NFL Draft and will be a key cog in the Huskers’ offensive machine. He led the Big Ten with 1,690 rushing yards – the fourth-highest single-season total in school history — in 2013, and was the second leading receiver with 26 receptions.

He will have to work a little harder to pick up yards this season however, at the Nebraska O-line lost its top five.

On the other side of the ball, the defensive line and the secondary also have several voids, which could be a problem against a Florida Atlantic team that won four straight to end 2013 and finish 6-6.

Florida Atlantic

Led by dual threat quarterback Jaquez Johnson, the Owls (2013: 6-6) will begin 2014 under the guidance of Charlie Partridge, who will make his coaching debut after serving an assistant at Wisconsin and Arkansas.

Florida Atlantic will look to build on an offense that averaged 37.8 points over their final four games in 2013, and Johnson, who was named Conference USA Newcomer of the Year, will be a big part of that.

Johnson threw for 1,866 yards and 12 touchdowns, while rushing for 767 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, but will need to help his team improve last year’s average of 26.4 points per game, if they want to challenge for a C-USA title.

Defensively, the Owls return the nucleus of the 11th best defense in the country , which yielded an average of 10 points during its season-ending four-game win streak and finished 11th in total defense overall.

College football betting trends

  • FAU are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games overall.

Week 1 NCAA Football Spread Prediction

The Owls are 17-5 ATS in their last 22 games overall.

So while I like the Cornhuskers here, the Owls could very well keep this game closer than expected and cover the spread.

Score Prediction: Nebraska 38, Florida Atlantic 20
