These two teams last played in 2011 when Washington won a very close game which came down to a huge defensive play made by the Huskies. After the Eagles outplayed the Dawgs badly that game, they still came away with a bitter defeat.

While the teams are different now, this is the kind of matchup we saw in the last meeting. And they could have different results this time around.

Eastern Washington

The Eagles of Eastern Washington University are thinking championship this season and have started the season by showing it.

After a strong performance against Sam Houston State and then Montana-Western, the Eagles are looking to finish non-conference with a second consecutive season of upsetting a Pac-12 opponent after serving up Oregon State a shocking loss last season on their home turf.

Leading the Eagles this season is Quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. Heralded as a potential Walter Payton candidate for best player in FCS, Adams Jr. has completed 54 of 79 passes for 672 yards, 9 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also has 69 yards on the ground.

The Eagles have a trio of receivers with over 100 yards receiving this year: Cory Mitchell (196 yards, 2 touchdowns), Shaq Hill (193 yards, 1 touchdown) and Kendrick Bourne (115 yards, 4 touchdowns.)

The same goes for the ground attack, as three running backs have over 100 yards rushing for the Eagles already in Quincy Forte (152 yards), Jalen Moore (108 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Mario Brown (102 yards, 1 touchdown.)

Washington

Despite winning a squeaker in Honolulu last week, the Huskies were not happy with the 17-16 decision. The young defense showed its youth while the new starters at every major offensive position showed their lack of cohesion with each other.

Last week, Jeff Lindquist started the game for the Huskies and went 10 of 26 for 162 yards and a touchdown. This week, Cyler Miles gets the start for the Huskies. Miles was suspended last week after an off the field incident this offseason but head coach Chris Peterson is hoping he can spark the offense that was highly touted.

On the ground, Lavon Coleman did a good job in his Husky debut with 78 yards, taking over for the departed Bishop Sankey. Through the air, John Ross was the Washington offense has he scored one touchdown on the ground and another through the air. In total, Ross had 20 yards rushing and 96 yards receiving to go with those 2 touchdowns.

On defense, Danny Shelton lead the team with 12 tackles and 2 sacks while linebacker John Timu racked up 9 tackles of his own. The team played good overall defense but allowed 217 yards on the ground against Hawaii.

NCAA football handicapping trends

  •  Under is 5-1 in Huskies last 6 home games
  •  Under is 6-1 in Huskies last 7 games in September
  •  Eagles are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 games overall
  •  Eagles are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 non-conference games

Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction

Washington has the tools to win big here, but if they play like last week, the Huskies could fall victim to a hungry Eagles squad. Cyler Miles will shake things up and will make the difference in this one.
