While the offense was never in question for Arizona State, they kept things rolling from last season without skipping a beat. It was the young, inexperienced Sun Devil defense that stood out, after only allowing two scores to Weber State.

For New Mexico, they will have a lot to overcome not only from the Sun Devils, but from their own roster as well as the team was dealt some tough news regarding this week’s game.

Arizona State

The Arizona State offense was so impressive, the coaches bench starting quarterback Taylor Kelly after the first half. Kelly had 238 yards passing and a touchdown at the time.

Replacing him was Mike Bertovici who was 6 of 12 for 65 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, D.J. Foster ran for 147 yards on 15 carries and added three touchdowns. Jaelen Strong was the leading Sun Devil receiver with 146 yards. He was followed by Gary Chambers (46 yards, 1 touchdown) and Ellis Jefferson (37 yards, 1 touchdown.)

In total, the Sun Devils put up 570 yards.

The young defense held its ground and only allowed 2 scores last week.

This week, they look to better that number as the nine new defensive starters work to gel with each other and try to refrain from giving up another 152 yards on the ground.

New Mexico

The bad news began before the game even started for New Mexico, who just learned they may be without starting Quarterback Cole Gautsche who was 3 of 5 for 36 yards passing and had 14 carries for 184 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground.

Jhurell Pressley was second in rushing with 9 attempts for 84 yards. Behind him was Teriyon Gipson who had 71 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.

Probably lost for the game due to a deep bruise is kick and punt returner / receiver Carlos Wiggins for the Lobos.

On defense, the Lobos need to do much better. After allowing a more than respectable 116 yards through the air, New Mexico gave up a mind boggling 330 yards on the ground en route to their loss against to UTEP.

They are going to have to step up big time in this to stand a chance.

Week 2 NCAA Football Prediction

Despite the hopes, prayers, wishes and little quirky stats, Arizona State has this game well in hand.

Free NCAA Betting Pick: Arizona State -25

Final Week 2 Score: Arizona State 42 – New Mexico 10

Especially with New Mexico losing their starting quarterback who is coincidentally also the team’s leading rusher, this game won’t even be close.
