CFB Matchup Tips: Handicapping 2015 Big 10 Football Games

2015-16 Early-Season College Football Matchups – (Big 10)

The Ohio State Buckeyes are your 2015 NCAA Football National Champions. They will hold that title forever, but it’s officially time for them to defend that championship.

In order to kick off a successful defense of last year’s championship, the Buckeyes will look to do something they failed to do last season: defeat the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Without home-field advantage, Ohio State will travel to Virginia Tech in Week 1 of the 2015-16 NCAA Football Season.

Ohio State Buckeyes @ Virginia Tech Hokies

Date: Monday, Sept. 7
Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
Venue: Lane Stadium
Odds: TBD

Revenge, revenge, revenge. That is what this one is all about.

In last season’s contest, the Buckeyes were just weeks removed from finding out Braxton Miller was sidelined. That means J.T. Barrett had only been known as the starting quarterback for a very short time, and in just his second start, he failed to lead the team to a victory.

This season, we still don’t know for certain whether it will be Barrett or Cardale Jones taking snaps behind center, but we can surmise it will be Jones. And even more important than the player is the lack of surprise. Ohio State will be far more ready for this contest than it was in Week 2 last season.

Michigan State Spartans vs. Oregon Ducks

Date: Saturday, Sept. 12
Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
Venue: Spartan Stadium
Odds: TBD

This is going to be a revenge game for the Michigan State Spartans. After falling to Oregon last season in blowout fashion (46-27), Sparty has two key advantages they didn’t have last season: They’re at home, and they’re going up against a team with a new quarterback.

We know Michigan State will have a size advantage against the Ducks, but they had that last year too. The absence of Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota will be the difference maker for the Spartans, so as long as they can contain true sophomore tailback Royce Freeman (who is also making a case for Heisman consideration), they’ll have a strong chance at coming away victorious.

Michigan @ Utah

Date: Thursday, Sept. 3
Time: 8:30 p.m. ET
Venue: Rice-Eccles Stadium
Odds: TBD

Another Big Ten-versus-Pac 12 matchup? You bet.

This one is going to not only kick off the regular season in Week 1, but it’s going to kick off the Jim Harbaugh era at Michigan. The Wolverines will be underdogs on the road against a Utah Utes squad that went 9-4 a year ago, but don’t be surprised if Harbaugh’s crew comes out with a ton of energy in the head coach’s first game roaming the sidelines.

Minnesota Golden Gophers vs. TCU Horned Frogs

Date: Thursday, Sept. 3
Time: 9:00 p.m. ET
Venue: TCF Bank Stadium
Odds: TBD

There are a few opportunities for the Big Ten to make a statement early in the season, and this is one of them.

Chances are, TCU is a bit overrated entering the season, but with a Heisman candidate quarterback and a likely No. 2 ranking nationally, this is a huge opportunity for the Golden Gophers to start the season off on a huge positive. The Horned Frogs dominated Minnesota last season, so look for the Golden Gophers to have a bit of extra motivation.

Wisconsin Badgers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Date: Saturday, Sept. 5
Time: 8:00 p.m. ET
Venue: AT&T Stadium
Odds: TBD

For the second season in a row, the Wisconsin Badgers are set to open their schedule against an SEC squad on a neutral field in Texas. Last season it was the LSU Tigers in Houston, while this year it’s the Alabama Crimson Tide in Arlington.

Although Paul Chryst probably wishes he had a cupcake in Week 1 of his first season at Wisconsin, this will be the ultimate test to see what he has in his debut. This game will likely be won on the ground, and we’ll include offensive line production in that assement as well.
