MAC Conference Football Previews: Central Michigan

Head Coach: Dan Enos
2009 Record: 12-2

Central Michigan Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

Is Central Michigan one of college football betting’s biggest trap doors this season? The 12-2 record and MAC title a year ago make the Chippewas tempting but they have to soldier on in 2010 without their two heroes.

Quarterback Dan LeFevour is off to the NFL’s Chicago Bears and coach Butch Jones left for Cincinnati in Brian Kelly’s footsteps.

Team Strengths:

Before we talk about life without LeFevour, we should understand that Central Michigan’s offensive situation isn’t entirely bleak. Its offensive line is pretty effective and it has some reliable receivers for new starting quarterback Ryan Radcliff. Kito Poblah in particular made lots of clutch grabs en route to a 681-yard season last year. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Running back Carl Volny will have an increased role this year and his 4.8 yards per carry 2009 suggests he’s up for the task.

The Chippewas also deploy an aggressive, rowdy defense that likes to hit hard and force turnovers. Middle linebacker Nick Bellore embodies what the “D” stands for. He does it all, piling up tackles, forcing fumbles, picking off passes, rushing the passer and playing with swagger.

Team Weaknesses:

Technically, we don’t know for sure that Radcliff will be a weakness at quarterback; he actually drew rave reviews in spring camp. But it’s hard to imagine him being anything besides a downgrade from LeFevour, who reached godlike status at Central Michigan.

Radcliff has a competent supporting cast but arguably doesn’t have NFL caliber-talent surrounding him at the skill positions. If he implodes, Central Michigan’s offense could become very bad very quickly.

Central Michigan 2010-2011 Football Predictions: 7-5

We have to give some credit to the rest of the team; losing LeFevour won’t send Central Michigan from first to worst overnight. But we do have to expect a step back in his absence.

There’s plenty of upside – MAC title upside – but potentially nightmarish downside too if Radcliff crashes and burns.
