2011-2012 Football Previews – Mountain West Conference – Boise St. Broncos

It seemed as though Boise State was poised for a BCS bowl last season until the stunning 34-31 overtime defeat at the hands of the Wolf Pack of Nevada that shoved them out of the national spotlight. Now they will be in a new conference ready to show that they are for real.

Chris Peterson is entering his sixth year as the head coach for the Broncos. During Peterson’s tenure at Boise State the team has gone an astonishing 61-5 (.924) having gone undefeated in the regular season three times.

This year looks to be no different, as the team will retain the majority of their explosive offense from 2010.

The one thing that has slipped the Broncos’ hands during their strong run under Peterson is a National Championship, but the team will be looking to add that to their list of growing accomplishments in 2011.

Lets take a look at how the team fairs on both sides of the ball going into the 2011 season, and whether or not they will bounce back from their disappointment of 2010 to win the Mountain West Conference.

Offense:

With Peterson being the offensive minded coach that he is, Boise State has been a dominant force on that side of the ball throughout his coaching term.

That success should continue with junior Kellen Moore coming back to quarterback after his sensational year in which he completed 245-345 passes for 3,506 yards and 33 touchdowns.

Moore will see his top running back return this year in junior Doug Martin. Martin had a tremendous year for the Broncos in 2010, rushing for 1,260 yards and scoring 12 times. The one-two punch of Moore and Martin behind one of the best offensive lines in the country that includes tackle Nate Potter; will be feared by every defense Boise State faces.

The only question on offense is the receiving corps. The team’s top-two receivers are gone, having moved on to the NFL, but their replacements do seem to have what it takes to step up and fill the void that Titus Young and Austin Pettis left when they declared for the draft.

Tyler Shoemaker will finally have his chance to shine after only catching 32 passes for 582 yards and 5 touchdowns in 2010.

Defense:

In 2010, the Broncos’ offense averaged 45 points per game. But what’s more impressive is the defense they had to back them up. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Boise State’s defense held opponents to under 13 points per game in 2010, a season in which they shutout Fresno State 51-0, San Jose State 48-0 and New Mexico State 59-0.

This year may be different for the Broncos though, having left the Western Athletic Conference to join Texas Christian University in the Mountain West where offenses are much more competitive.

The Broncs will have their top-two defensive players back as well in defensive back Jeron Johnson and linebacker J.C. Percy. Johnson led his team with 82 tackles, which is astonishing for a defensive back and will most likely be even more dominant in his senior season.

The Broncos will also retain junior defensive lineman Shea McClellin for his senior year. McClellin led his team with 8.5 sacks in 2010 and will look to be even more dominant in 2011.

2011 BSU Prediction: 1st in MWC

The only hole on this team is the receiving corps, but they have players to fill in to those roles and a great quarterback to get the ball to wherever it needs to be, regardless of who is catching it. The conference will be won on November 12 when they host TCU.

After loosing Andy Dalton to the NFL, TCU will have an uphill climb against Boise State.
