MAC Conference Schools 2010-2011 Football Previews: Akron Zips

Coach: Rob Ianello

2009 record: 3-9

Akron Gambling Odds from Sportsbook.com to win BCS: (Field To Win Odds) 25/1

For the first time in a while, there’s reason for optimism for the Akron Zips. New head coach Rob Ianello had a great reputation recruiting talent as Wisconsin, Arizona and Notre Dame. Now, he gets a shot at the big job.

He’ll start small at Akron but he’ll have as much to work with as he could hope for given the MAC school’s modest stature, as 17 starters return.

Team Strengths:

Akron was bad in 2009. Bad everywhere. So it’s hard to pin one “strength” on the team when it lacked any real strength last year. Then again, both the offensive and defensive schemes are changing dramatically, so weaknesses in theory could become strengths in some areas. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

For example, the Zips are switching form a spread to a pro-style offense. That should help them better utilize running back Alex Allen’s talents. He has the ability to be a high-impact player and could see more holes in 2010 as the new offense does a better job shifting, adding extra blockers and creating more mismatches.

If Akron has a strength anywhere, it’s Allen and the running game.

Team Weaknesses:

Akron’s weaknesses still greatly outweigh its strengths. Even if it runs the ball better in 2010 it still has a long way to go to improve on the nation’s 113th-ranked offense. Matt Rodgers and Patrick Nicely will compete to start at quarterback but whoever does will probably have growing pains in the new offense. That could result in mental mistakes and plenty of turnovers.

The Zips’ defense was atrocious last year. It allowed 367 yards and four touchdowns per game. It was especially awful stopping the run, conceding 171 yards per contest. The defense will transition from a 3-3-5 to a 4-3 scheme in 2010 and that should better utilize their top defensive players Almondo Sewell and Brian Wagner in the front seven.

If you really want to talk weaknesses, how about special teams? Branko Rogovic was Akron’s “top” kicking option last season…and he went 7 for 15 in field goal attempts.

2010-2011 Akron Football Prediction: 4-8

We’ll give Akron an extra win thanks to new coaching and some improved game planning. But this is still a weak team even with 17 starters returning.

The Zips also face three BCS opponents in their first four weeks, so it will be tough for them to start on the right foot.
