Coach: Kyle Whittingham
2008 Record: 13-0

Utah of course became the mid-major dreamboat last season, going unbeaten, winning the MWC outright and beating Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. How will the encore performance stack up this season?

There are a couple of factors playing against Utah this time around. The Utes must travel to Oregon for the Ducks on Sept. 19 and they get the MWC’s other two powerhouses, TCU and BYU, also on the road. They also must replace their offensive and defensive coordinators. sportsbook prefootball 250x250 mybanner1 2009 Utah Utes Gambling Odds

JUCO Terrance Cain should step in at quarterback; he was the junior college Offensive Player of the Year in ’08. Big load Matt Asiata returns at running back and the Zanes – C Taylor and LT Beadles – will lead the effort in the trenches.

Defensively, the Utes have loaded up on talented JUCOs and the D returns its top four tacklers; though Paul Kruger’s 7.5 sacks and Sean Smith’s five INTs depart.

Team Strengths
Stevenson Sylvester, Mike Wright and Nai Fotu comprise an admirable linebacker unit. DE James Aiono was a top JUCO and safety Joe Dale is a gamer.

Asiata racked up over 700 yards and 12 scores on the ground last season and I’d expect him to surpass that production in ’09.

Team Weaknesses
Freddie Brown, Brent Casteel and Bradon Godfrey’s combined 2,020 yards and 15 TDs are gone. Utah must find receivers to pick up the slack and JUCOs David Reed and Aiona Key should be the candidates. We’ll see how they perform. Longtime starting QB Brian Johnson has graduated and though Cain is a decorated JUCO player, he has big shoes to fill.

The target is on Utah’s backs this season and they face a decidedly tougher schedule this year. Asking for another unbeaten campaign and January bowl win is likely a bit much. However, this is still a strong team with, as far as mid-majors are concerned, plenty of talent.

Utah will most certainly have a winning season in 2009, but they should be a couple notches down in the MWC rat race.

2009 Utah Utes Record Prediction: 10-3

I think that after last season the expectations might be set a bit high for this team going into this year. I think 9 maybe 10 wins are possible, but that would be it.

The 2008 season was certainly a memorable one for Utah. The Utes finished up the regular season with a perfect 12-0 record, but failed to reach the BCS National Championship game. Instead, they were relegated to the Sugar Bowl where they had to take on a strong Utah team. Utah put up 31 points and handed the Crimson Tide a crushing defeat. That capped off a great season, but it also raised questions as to whether or not the Utes should have been playing for a championship.
